p.1 #1 · 5DII: good deals for non-IS lenses?

5DMkII is on pre-order (I will not be disappointed coming from a 10D ), and I am now looking at good glass to manage the wait.

The new 5D's High-ISO performance means higher shutter speed, and sounds like a good deal to me: very nice non-IS lenses can be found at a bargain (well, relatively speaking). With my limited budget, 300/4L comes to mind. Plus the IS version was suposedly not as good as the non-IS one. If I had to buy a 70-200 again, I would probably save $500 and get the non-IS version.

Am I missing something? Would you buy an IS lens anymore?

Why limit your creativity to high shutter speed ? I sometimes shoot at 1/3sec and IS comes in handy.

Don't get me wrong, I like IS and use it on 3 of my lenses. There were numerous threads about the value of IS, and that's really not my point here.

That said, the 5DMkII's high-ISO sensor might give a second life to non-IS lenses: by cranking the ISO up, you could arguably reach the shutter speed a long lens and 21MP command. That's why I am considering the 300/4L (actually the 300/2.8L as well )

Just wondered if I was the only "future" 5DMkII owner in the market for older great tele glass. Spending $3k+ for a lens sounds fun, but you can do it a limited number of times before it gets annoying ...

IS doesnt just help in achieving a good shot at a slow shutter speed when static. Just think about panning shots - they are far easier to get right with IS. Also if you are into aircraft you sometimes need slow shutter speeds for propellor blades to look good...

If your idea is REALLY THAT GOOD, don't you think the owners of these lenses will realize this also, and keep their equipment...

So, your point is?
