p.1 #1 · 5D and 1/160 sync speed

I am using off camera flash (580exII) and wireless triggers (MicroSync) and my 5D will only do a sync speed of 1/160. When set at 1/200 there is a linear shadow at edge of the image. Is this an issue with the wireless signal? When flashs on camera it syncs to 1/250 no problem.

Any advise on how to fix this issue?
Thanks in advance.

1/160 is the max sync with the 5D and wireless triggers. 1/200 will usually show the second curtain. No problems with your setup at all and it can't be "fixed". I believe Canon only 'warranty' the sync to 1/60 with wireless triggers.

Well that sucks then. My 20D will do wireless with 1/200 go figure?!
Maybe it is the size of the sensorand shuttercurtain travel distance between the two.

Thanks!

That could be part of the problem, the real culprit with a wireless system is trigger delay caused by the transmitter and receivers themselves. It adds a bit of 'lag' to the system, that's why you can sync faster with a PC cord.

If you desire fast syncing you could get an original 1D, they go pretty cheap!

I got a 1D, will have to test them on that one too. I do know that the putting the flash on the camera in High Syncs Speed will do 1/500+ sync speeds easy, with no "Shutter Shadow".

Does anyone use pocket wizzards and a 5d? If so, do they sync at 1/200 or 1/160?
Just curious.

IIRC, Microsyncs are rated to be a lot slower than PWs or Skyports. I sync fine with PWs and Skyports at 1/200 with my 5D.

Thanks, will have to look into the skyports as well.

My 5D only syncs at 1/160 with my skyports, but it synced at 1/200 no problem with pocket wizards.

RB67's have a leaf shutter and will go all the way to 1/400th wireless, if you want to have some real fun Dirt cheap nowadays, too!

How many others use the Elinchrom Skyports with the Canon 5D? At what sync speeds?
1/160 or 1/200?

Thanks

BTW ~ You can drop the ISO down to 50 on a 5D so technically you still get that stop down of light, thus emulating 1/200.

While true, you then need more flash output to arrive at the same exposure.

I have managed to sync my 1DmkIII with my Bowens at up to 1/1000th

I had the ST-E2 on the 1D. It triggered my 580ex to flash which in turn triggered my bowens

I guess enough of a delay was created to get the bowens in sync. I have only done it as a quick test. It is noticeable that at 1/1000 the power is dramaticly down.
