I doubt that most would notice 24fps vs 30fps. Certainly the movie crowd would enjoy 24fps more, but maybe more for the shutter speed difference than the actual frame rate.
You can comfortably recode the 30fps to 24fps in Premiere, Vegas, Final Cut, etc.

What is more interesting though, is the presumption (read as foregone conclusion) that the video sample is taken from the whole sensor spread, and then compressed to the 1080 base. This means that the actual capture is 5K, same as the RED Epic, but with a larger sensor.

Three things for me in this:
1. The following lines of XL cameras will compete with the REDs and ARRIs.
2. The following generations SLRs will have higher resolving video using bigger throughputs and larger capacity single state memory.
3. More artists (with lower budgets) will enter the Rebel DV market. Holy Holly is taking a bow in Tinseltown.

I have just yesterday realized something else though. I need to include video in my Pro Photo courses

I'm not checking 69 pages to see if this has already been posted (apologies if it has):

http://www.pdngearguide.com/gearguide/content_display/news/e3ifb7c0deaad627f7c9f1fb4d41382ec02

It speaks a little about what the film's supposed to be and more on how it came together.

I've heard you can do a lot more pp with a raw file. Never seen a single example but i do hear that.

In fact most of the award winning images at wppi each year are taken by photographers who only shoot in jpeg. They obviously don't seem to think they are limited by any means and neither do those who judge their work.

I have been a commercial retoucher for 13 years and have worked with photographers who shoot for National Geographic, and many who shoot for Ad agencies, stock or whatever. I have used Photoshop since version 2. Before that I did some studio commercial photography for a couple years shooting film with 8x10 and 4x5 cameras (hated it BTW). Most of the photographers we deal with shoot raw when they shoot digital. Some still shoot chromes.

Of course you can shoot jpegs and get great shots, but it is not a good format to shoot if you plan on manipulating the images later in any way. The company I work for has made good money "fixing" jpegs taken by photographers.

the problems are with the original 1920x1080p not the quarter-res versions.

I have the 5D Mk II on order .... but I am already thinking that it will be obsolete in just 6 months time .... after Leica announced the release of their S2 .... and there is talk about Nikon working on their MF body .... and Canon with their new and perhaps bigger sensor and Dual Digic V image processor, and Sony .....

I'm a little puzzled about the huge attention given to the video thing; i was never interested in video and still i'm not. But it seems like a huge number of photographers are into it a lot and they were waiting for a video SLR. I just don't get it...
I DO understand what this camera can do for a videographer or cinematographer, but really, i enjoy taking stills a lot and it's a very different thing than video footage. As far as taking stills this is just a little more than more megapixels, but as a photographic tool, not much improved from the 5D.
To me it would be, for example, a lot more useful to have more bracketing shots and with wider latitude for easier HDR.
But i'm honestly trying to understand what this craze is all about...

No prices yet for the Leica S2, but I bet it will be expensive. The Nikon MF needs MF glass, another format altogether and will again be expensive. If you've got the money, go for it, as long as you're not one a manager of the financial institutions that's gonna get $1 trillion taxpayer buyout.

We need to look at the 35mm format and the fine lenses that exist for it. However, the 1.6x crop, 1.5x DX crop and 4/3 crop is a dead end for SLR bodies. Soon everything will be full frame.

Pardon my ignorance, but wouldn't using a bigger sensor require lenses with larger diameter glass elements?
The EF line was/is built for film/full frame.

A larger sensor would probably wield the same results as using a EF-S lens on a full frame sensor camera (disregarding the rear element hitting the mirror, of course).
Right?

Or am I wrong?

Yes, that's right. For example, a MF Nikon would use a whole new line of lenses, all (much) more expensive than the current linup.

20,000 Euros or US$30,000 .... and the screen looks pathetic compared to the 5D II

You are worried about obsolescence before you've even received the camera?! Wow, talk about speeding up product life cycles - this is over the top! Maybe you should pre-order the 5D MkIII instead?

Does anybody know if the camera turns on the IS on IS lenses while it records? Do you think the audio will record the sound of the gyro's spinning on IS lenses?

Eh, the life cycle of anything electronic or with a processor these days is as soon as you buy it it's outdated/out engineered.

Get the camera and enjoy the heck out of it!!! I'm sure it will be plenty to handle for some time. This is just showing us the future of DSLR/Video DSLR cams to come from all the big names in this industry. Without engineering/competition we would still be stuck with the 5d MkI

Soon everything will be full frame

No full frame is like medium format in the film era, while APS-C is like "35mm" in film. Crop is not dead end, but mainstream, while full frame is the format for quality conscious upclass. Full frame will come down in prize and grow in substance, but I guess it will be never more than about 1/3 of the market the next decade (that would relatively already be a huge share of the market). We will going to see more new formats: like 3D (Fuji's introduction today at the Kina) pano formats (expect future Xpan type wide or stitched sensors) and oversized formats between full frame and real MF (like Leica S introduction). All these formats will be niche formats however, while cropped sensors will be the mainstream.

Not that it has anything to do with the 5DmkII BTW. Have EOSfun

seriously comrades, how many will buy the leica S2 in the immediate future?
i would guess less than 0.5%. a niche market, not for the masses. then again leica always appeals to the very rich. that's their legacy.
i was the first to predict that the 5d mk2 will be a 21mp. japanese corporations, unlike their german counterparts prefer a 'safe and proven ground within their comfort zone'. S2 was a revolution. will it spread like wild fire? unlikely in the next couple of years. will it catch on as a trend? maybe.

canon 5d mk2 will sell like hot cakes in the coming months no matter what will be introduced. why? it has broad appeal and a fairly affordable price tag.
when will the 5d mk2 passion dies out? until 6d appears ... or will it be 5d mk3?! hahaha!

"But it seems like a huge number of photographers are into it a lot and they were waiting for a video SLR. I just don't get it..."

From my perspective the Video capability is great for about four of my clients. While doing studio or location work we can shoot some small videos that they can use for presentations and web. Just a simple pan or move could be very useful to them. It should add some billable times to the shoot's with very little effort on my part, without using special equipment and lights. Time will tell how this is accepted.

Stupid question: what will the raw file size be on the new 5d? Somewhere in the 20-30MB range?

The new Leica S2 has just ONE AF assist point. It must be totally crap as camera, I wonder why they even bothered releasing it (: ! Even the new crappy 5d MK2 can do better than that (:.
I'm going to start an exchange program with you : for every 5d mk2 and Leica S2 you bring to me I will give you one (slightly used (: ) excellent 1d MK3 . 45 AF points and everything (:. And you can pay me a little difference and thank me later for helping you get rid of this new photographic junk (:.
Additional advantages : you can have 6 times more spaces on your hard drives, lighter and cheaper computing systems, and generally you can be excused of the silly burden of so much uncalled for detail in the 21MP sensor and 40MP sensor.
Everything in a nicely weather sealed package.
I'm so glad for the huge contribution my incredibly informative post has brought to this forum and to your lives, in general. How did you ever manage to live without me so far ? (:

PS Now I will take my pills and go to bed (:
