Well, keep in mind the new AF is supposed to take into account color when computing AF. This should make it a bit quicker and more accurate than the previous 5D, but I am a bit let down that it does seem like the outer AF points arent cross-type.
Thanks Jeff. I seriously wasn't sure. I certainly would like to see wider spacing on the AF sensors of the FF offerings, but to be honest, when I need AF, it's usually center anyhow (sports, action of any sort).

I'll never understand this mindset. Anything from a G9 on up is a HUGE step forward from what photogs had in their arsenal just 5 years ago. To say today's cameras, Canon, Nikon, Sony, whatever... are not particularly good befuddles me.
While I agree that Canon can do better, to say that their current offerings from the XSi to the 50D to the 5D (and hopefully soon a hands-on tested 5DII) to the 1-series are not amazingly capable is amazing to me. Everyone wants everything packed into every model. I just don't understand. I guess the only answer is for all of the cameras from the XSi to the 1DsIII to share the exact same feature set (AF, MP, ISO, LCD, FPS, etc) but to be shipped in 4 body configurations and at 4 price points. Spend $800 for a small plastic or $8000 for a magnesium pro body, and you all get the same technology.
I think Nikon is pushing the market right now, and I think a lot of people are misinterpreting that to mean Canon sucks. That's just not even close to true. And for the record, I'm not a fan-boy. If I didn't own a single lens today, I'd have to think long and hard about what system I would buy in to. That's the result of strong competition, and another result is that we're ALL winning form this competition. Winning... whining. They apparently go hand in hand.

Umm.. I got the 5D and sold my 40D just 2 months ago. Don't regret it for a second.
exactly my point if the 5DII became a vastly superior sports camera than the 50D then it'd cannibalise it something cruel. As it stands it's quite horses for courses.

1 sample does not a camera make, but is anybody else disappointed by the splotchiness of the ISO 6400 shot?
Not really. With sensible chroma NR, e.g. NeatImage, it will produce quite nice results at least on a par with the D700. It looks to me to behave very like a 1Ds3 in that regard. In camera NR could be a bit better, I suppose, but there is so little latitude at these high speeds that it is better to shoot raw or sraw anyway. The news is that I don't see any signs that this is going to blow away the 1Ds3. It looks like more or less the same sensor.

I think its a general consensis that the off center points in the 5D are pretty much unuseable. To release a camera at that price point in 2008 without addressing that issue is arrogance of the worst kind. The excuse is laughable, who shoots sports with a 21 megapixel camera?
Are you saying that the 5D bigger brother should be a sports shooter? If so, go buy something else? Canon has always sold this body as Landscape and Portrait.

Did you read what I wrote in context? I was specifically talking about AWB, nothing else.
Jeffs image shows how ridiculous the AF coverage is. The worst thing is that 1Ds-series is not so much better. I think 1D-series is the best from a coverage perspective after all, followed by XXD.
I believe many shooters of moving subjects choose a composition by first choosing and AF point. So how Canon places their points has a direct effect on how our pics will look and on what kinds of pictures that can be taken (with AF without cropping).
I personally think this has a much bigger effect on the quality and diversity of pictures taken than some slight improvement in noise levels and such things. I'm surprised there is not more discussion about it.
As excited as am that Canon released the predecessor to the 5D, I'll still continue shooting with my 5D. I really don't see the need of the HD video capture, but I guess some photographer's will. I'll certainly wait until the price comes down a bit before I invest in this body. Although it's definitely a good move on Canon's behalf.
