Well, I can't tell you how disappointed I am in both Canon and Amazon for this. I realize I am probably dumb for preording with Amazon, but I did it the day of the release. The disappointment is that they can't give me any update at all. Some people are receiving cameras from them, no clue what order we are in, how far down the list I am, or if I will have it by Christmas. I thought with them being huge, Canon would take care of them.
just got a voicemail from my moms (where i get most my crap shipped) that my package from hong kong just arrived today from digital rev. so my order was shipped the day after purchase and shipping took 3 business days. ill report back tomorrow after i go pick up the camera. as long as they shipped the actual correct camera and its not broken i can recommend them if you havent already pre-ordered and dont mind paying a significant premium

Because they can do it and sell it for a lot less .... like 1/3 the price of a Leica MF system.
What evidence do you have for that? All the manufacturers costs are the same. Leica's aren't even made by Leica any more, and the New Hassie lenses are made by Fuji, not Zeiss, but the prices are the same.
The 1Ds mkIII and the D3x already cost 1/3rd the price of the Leica S2.

Where will your warrantee come from? The USA one won't be there, and the international one won't work here (if it's in the box, which I at least hope it is).

the cam would have to be serviced in Hong Kong, so knock on wood that it is free of any manufacturing defect or issue from Canon. (tricky....)

Just got my 5D II kit and an additional battery from Shutterbug, OR. They have a few bodies and kits. You may want to call around to see if some preorders have been cancelled or not pick-up if interested.

That was what I thought. I would never take the chance with a camera like this. It's not worth a few bucks or a few weeks.
I bought a lens for my daughter's 40D from a company there. No warranty in the box at all. So far so good.

Is it me, or does that "self cleaning sensor" seem more like a gimmick than a real option? Almost every sample I've seen on the canon website has a fair amount of dust on it.
well my 40D has needed a lot less manual cleaning than my 20D FWIW
I have hear others claim it does nothing for them, but it seems to work for me, what can I say.

To those who've received calls from their retailer about their MKII, are you getting a kit or just the body?
I placed my preorder for a body and was fourth in line.. but theyve been told that they'll only be receiving kits on the first delivery. So I'm wondering if this is the case for others out there. I really dont want to buy the kit, but willing to do so if there arent retailers out there selling the body only.
my local stores actually got bodies only (and I got the impression one of them had preferred kits). It seems kinds of random to me.

I keep in touch with a number of my old clients from when I ran my lab. No, it doesn't seem to be doing too well. I've been told by more than one, that they were disappointed in the resolution of the D2, and that the D700 suits the needs of most pro's.
With all the criticism of Canon's pricing and feature policies, it seems that Nikon's way of doing it with the D3/700 is hurting them badly.
I know that some people want top features in a much less expensive body, but it's not a good way to market a line. Too many D700 sales are killing the sales of the D3, which isn't a good thing. it just hurts the bottom line of the company, which impacts their R&D as well as future models.
Now, they are trying to make up for it with this high pricing. Considering that the only difference is a higher pixel count sensor, with poorer specs in the noise and dynamic departments (otherwise, why would the ISO limits be so much less?), as well as in the fps specs, what are photogs getting for $3000 more? Thom is wondering about that with no good answer. That's why it's a bad idea to have the same bodies at wildly different pricing, or the same specs at wildly different pricing.
Canon will be looking at this very closely, we can be sure. As the 5D mkII pre-sales are so much higher than they expected, they can now relax.
unless the D700 sales and the migration it helped to attract and then the attendant extra lens sales ends up more than making up for the loss to the D3, which MIGHT be the case.
