+2....
But we as Americans deserve to buy whatever the credit card company will allow us to...

I'm buying with CASH, even if it means saving for a month or two extra

For those who really want to go crazy with the video feature, an extreme grip!

Depending which kit you go for, this could cost more than the price of the camera body...

Lousy timing? I guess its best for bringing out the imo world-leading DSLR AND HDTV camera at the lowest price ever. :-)
And I am absolutly sure, you US-people will get some great bank(crupted) offers for purchasing a 5D MK II/EF 400 2.8 L Kit keeping all the risks at the bank and away from all (so called) photographers. Canon might sell 10 Million peaces in US only. That surely will low down the unemploement rate to zero. Everybody will be a successfull photographer. And the failure will not hit world economy as strong as that housy thing did. So you might be happy, guys.

I am living in germany. Here its more difficult. I just saw some pictures of Jeff Ascouh. As far I remember at High ISO I (12.800). If that is what we get, I really have to think about freeing some space in the garage and selling some of the litter via Ebay to be able to get that tool. :-/

The dealer i preordered from says his canon rep says early December for his first shipment.

One thing that never seems to be made clear in all these bits of information is whether it's about the date of shipment from Japan, the date of arrival at any shore (and the country being discussed), and the date of arrival at any given shore. Those are all different dates.

I'm not really sure of the point you're making, Ralph. There are people doing well and people doing poorly everywhere, and that's always been the case.

As far as American buying psychology is concerned, what's taking a bit is the idea that there will always be more money tomorrow than today.

I was talking to an American on another forum who is convinced that "business activity" always means more income; I couldn't seem to get him to understand that sometimes "business activity" results in a negative capital flow for someone, and if he's not making sure it's not him, then it is him.

Everyone certainly has to evaluate his own economic position, but if I were an amateur photographer seriously worried today about whether I'd be able to make my mortgage over the next 2-3 years, I would not be contemplating buying a $2700 USD toy today.

As a professional, my considerations are different--it's not a "toy" to me.

buy within your means, even if that, er, means no new camera this year.

That would be Nikon style. That's how they torpedoed Canon's 40D sales.

you know guys after a second thought, i don't think that i will be very happy with 5d mark II, i'm really used to the 1d series specially with their ergonomics, build quality. i need i really good water proofed camera for extreme weathers. I've actually sold my 1ds mark II for the 5D II, but I've actually tried the older one before, it's not like it guys, the options, controls, focusing screen are really important to me than HD movies or clearer 3.0 LCD, etc..
Plus I've compared images between the 50d with Digic 4 vs 1d mark III with Digic 3
and i didn't see any substantial differences, instead i was much happier with 1d mark III results.

50D was 2 weeks later in US than in China. Thus, 5D II could start shipping by 12/05/2008 if the same amount of delay applies. This is killing me since me vacation is coming up.

I spoke with one dealer in the US who, in his opinion, felt that Canon would have sufficient stock by end of December to meet the pre-orders.

We all wait as many of us want a 1D camera, but can't afford (or wont pay) the cost or the size.

My #1 concern with this 5D2 is that it may have focusing issues similar to the 1D3 though I doubt it seeming AF isnt as crucial on the 5D2 than on a 1D3

It will not. Hardware is the same, but processing is better and faster. If there are any AF issues, new firmware will correct it.

The question remains how much more low light sensitive is the AF? How the AF is faster and more accurate?

The 5D II is most certainly not a camera for everyone. The 1D3, 1Ds3, D700, D3 and A900 are all just as good or better, and would appeal to people in very different ways. I couldn't care less about the HD video either, but the 5D II is definitely my camera of choice for 4 main reasons .... good IQ, high ISO with low noise, compact/lightweight body, and price point. Everything else, like the high-res VGA screen, is icing on the cake.

Does anyone know when the 5D MK II will be available in the US? It looks really cool.

how can it be more light sensitive if it has the exact same AF sensor?

as for faster, it could, IF the main CPU is faster, and who says it is

it could be more accurate if they tweaked the FW better

I'd love a D700 with the 5dmkii sensor and FW code for movie mode.
If only the 3D....

So many people I talk to are like well there is lots to like over my xxD, but man, paying $3000 and ending up with worse body performance, I don't know what to do?

Why would you not be happy without trying it first?

I've actually sold my 1ds mark II for the 5D II, but I've actually tried the older one before, it's not like it guys, the options, controls, focusing screen are really important to me than HD movies or clearer 3.0 LCD, etc..

Only a few people know how different or the same 5D is compared to 5D MkII.

Plus I've compared images between the 50d with Digic 4 vs 1d mark III with Digic 3 and i didn't see any substantial differences, instead i was much happier with 1d mark III results.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the images between the 50D and 5D MkII would be different even with the same processing unit because they have different sensors. A logical comparison of images would be between 1D MkIII and 5D MkII, wouldn't it?

Going by Rob Galbraith's site.

..it now has the ability to detect scene colour temperature and light flicker, then incorporate that as part of the camera's autotofocus calculation...

This is probably due to the Digic IV processing. This should make the 5DMkII better at low light focusing and there is some anecdotal comments from those people who have evaluated the pre-production models.
