For me, definetely a miss. Where I would see improvements possible on the 5D (AF, fps, sealing), I see only very incremental change, if not no change at all (AF). I am a bit upset the gapless sensor technology did not make it to full frame sensors yet. My 5D has served me well so far, and will continue doing so. For new buyers, I am sure this camera will be a hit though.

I think Canon went the cheap way... They have got the 1Ds3 sensor laying around (and probably did some heavy investments on it's development). So they figured... Let's put the 1Ds3 sensor in a xxD body and we will have a hit... Nothing wrong with that of course...
Same formula as the 5D - great image quality, not so great body (compared to the D700, that is).
I'm betting there will be double rebates sooner than Canon would like.

+1.
Canon still trying to sell megapixels, not great cameras

hmm accoridng to other sites RG is wrong and the 5dmkii does use gapless technology as well as other improvements (moe than he listed) so the sensor doesn't, at all, appear to be held back and it should absolutely rock!
Ok guys, I quote the AF description from Dpreview:
"Precision focus and metering
A 9-point auto focus system is supported by 6 additional invisible Assist AF points, located inside the spot-metering circle to optimize subject tracking performance in AI SERVO AF mode. For accurate exposure readings in tricky lighting conditions, the spot metering circle covers just 3.5% of the frame."
We can now say it is not the same AF than the previous 5D
Another thing, as skibum5 says, the sensor is a brand new one and it seems it uses gapless technology too.

Same. Exact. AF. They didn't bother to even make the outer AF points cross-type. Wha, wha, whaaaat
According to the 5D MK II specs all 9 AF points are cross type. Maybe you read the old specs for the EOS 5D?
From dpreview specs:
• 9-point TTL CMOS sensor
• 6 "Invisible Assist AF points"
• All points cross-type for lenses of F5.6 or faster
• Center point additionally sensitive with lenses of F2.8 or faster
• AF working range: -0.5 - 18 EV (at 23°C, ISO 100)
3.9 fps and 13 frames Raw burst? I get 3fps and 17 frames Raw and 15 with + jpeg now. I would have like 5fps and at least 20 Raw, 17 with jpeg. LCD better....yes that is good. They don't seem to have a better camera after 3 years then they should have............something is missing.........
3.9 fps and weak AF. It may not be the same AF but the AF in the cams other than the 1 series has been a real let down.
They may have improved it but I bet it's not pro AF.

Looks great...I sold my 5D for a 1ds Mark II due to focusing problems in low light. I hope the focus system is much better in the 5D II..
Sold my 5D for a 1DII because of the same thing. I cant understand why Canon did not put 40D/50D AF to 5DII. Would have been very interested about 5DII if they did.

i guess geoff's long post was correct.
he said new AF is reserved for 1seriesmarkiv, 60D and perhaps 5dmkiii whenever hopw many more years that comes out

And why would Canon give you the same AF as the $8000 1Ds3 for $2700? I dunno, the old 5D AF worked great for me, can't say I'm disappointed they merely upgraded it to all cross-type sensors. They work great on the 40D and are bound to be even better in this newer rendition. Why fix it if it ain't broke. Looks like a perfect landscape and travel camera. If you need a gun slinger tank 'o camera the 1D series is readily available.
Does anyone here make money shooting? Just curious... I can hardly find anything wrong with my current 5D's with 99% of what I shoot for clients. If the MKII works near as well as the current 5D, I think they have a real winner.
Sure.. if you shoot in the elements or sports you would need something more robust...(for that I use a 1DMKIII), but in reality (at least for me)...the current feature set works fine and has made me 20X the ROI. Will I get one of these...Probably so. My current 5D has a lot miles on it and keeps going strong after 3 years...It needs a replacement... I think this body will be a huge hit for studio and wedding/low-light shooters that don't necessarily require the 1D feature set at over twice the cost.
I am confused why so many people are poo poo'ing this camera already... very odd.
Oh one other thing... in the master thread, there is 2 different links directly to Canon offical documentation that both state 9 Cross-Type AF + 6 invisible assists. Basically, the 40D AF not the current 5D AF system.

Funny.. my 5D easily outperformed my 1D MKIIN in low-light focusing (in One-Shot with center AF point). That is how I primarily use it so it works well for me. The MKII series definitely was better in Servo... I did just the opposite and sold my MKIIN... I have a MKIII now and still use my 5D more at weddings than any other body I have owned.
I make my money shooting weddings, and was basically looking for a D700 with an EF mount, as were a lot of people, the ISO will rock my socks I'm sure, but the 9 point AF system from the 40D is barely accurate in ISO1600 light, I just can't see it coping in ISO6400 light (let alone 25,600!!!!)
