The specs on the official Canon website say it's "9 pts Cross Type". That probably means the AF system will be similar to the one on the 40D/50D, plus the 6 assist points. It's possible the official website got that wrong though.
Sorry yes upgraded to 40D specs, but the same layout and just an evolution of the 9 + 6 point system. On the 5D the coverage is far to small. I'd have been happier if they had expanded the coverage as well.

I gotta say it sounds like an interesting camera. I also gotta say that it's a bit of a let down. That sensor better be very impressive for low light - low noise photography, because based on specs alone, the D700 is more impressive, other than lack of HD video recording, as a versatile photo capturing tool. The 5D sounds more demographically specialized.
If the HD video capture is solid though, gosh, it could be cool. Can you imagine taking home videos with the ability to shift depth of field and focus points, like in the movies. This could open up a lot of creative opportunities. I'd love to use my 70-200 or 85 f/1.2 to this end and see how they'd operate in video capture.
I am a bit disappointed in the AF, as the 5D's AF system, while accurate, feels a bit half baked as is. It indicates to me that Canon has not stabilized their latest generation AF yet or that they feel that 5D shooters may not really need all of those AF points.
Lack of weather sealing is disappointing, but moreso, only 3.9 FPS was very disappointing. I'd take a higher FPS rate with the 9 point AF, or more AF points at solwer FPS. Apparently, we'll get neither.
Ultimately, what will decide for me whether I upgrade my 5D for the Mark II will be IQ. If the camera can accurately focus and capture clean images in low light, despite its ungodly 21 mp sensor, then I may be tempted. Otherwise, I am staying put, as the 5D remains such a fabulous camera and I'd be willing to wait for the next iteration and better AF.....

no 5fps... cause 4.9 is really going to hold you back? It has weather sealing and improved AF, AND its over 20mp and under 3K as everyone demanded... sheesh

I am much more interested in the 24L II. How much better can they make an already excellent lens ? Those who wait shall get their answer in a few short months.
The 50 f/1.2 focus flaw has hopefully thought some of us not to jump into buying Canon's newly introduced lenses.
24L II vs ZE 21 should be very interesting
The sub wavelength coating of the 24L II is very clever and I was working on butterfly/moth nano-structures in their wing scales a few years ago and they are amazing feats of evolution.
Hopefully they will add this coating as a running upgrade to more lenses, especially WA lenses.
I should say, yes the 5d II is a big jump from the 5D in specs and I'll upgrade (after it's been fully tested and reviewed), but it won't be the one camera does all (almost all) solution I was hoping. Expectations have been raised so high that's why it appears as a let down in some areas, but better in other areas than expected. Price is excellent and can't complain too much about that.
Nikon will probably repsond at PMA with a D800 with 18-24MP and add HD video, and other improvements to the D700, so they won't be too worried for too long.

Disappointed overall ... No 5fps, no AF improvement, no weather sealing. Want to know how much IQ improvement it will have over 5D. It seems I will stick to my 5D for a while.
p.4 #6 · Canon 5D Mark II Announced! 24L II And More Too!
Canon has shown IQ is the only PRO feature they will give you.
Canon knows that people who need the 'pro' features (faster AF, more points, true weather sealing etc.) will pay the extra grand for it... This camera is aimed squarely at exactly those people who value image quality but don't shoot sports or fast action in torrential rain. They have made other cameras with those feature sets, and will obviously continue to make them, given that they haven't tried to bridge the gap here. People who want those features can pay for them - people who don't, have an exceptionally high resolution camera, with proven IQ pedigree without too many bells and whistles.
And before people complain that the 1D3 doesn't work as it's supposed to, level your criticism at the 1D3, not at a body that has never been intended to shoot sports or wildlife... It's how Canon have delineated their line - there are cameras for everybody bar the sports/wildlife shooter who wants a small format body.
Exactly what I want, as a casual street shooter and sometime travel shooter - both in an amateur capacity.

Oh no it is a FF 50D with HD movie. 3.9fps!
Ok VF went to 98%, but X-Sync is still a lousy 1/200, AF is unchanged!
Argh - IQ will be a given, but now where the specs I'd hoped. I'd given up 5MP and the ISO 12800 and 25600, for 5fps, 1/250 X-sync, and upgraded AF.
Probably get one as my landscape/macro/ camera but still means I'll be waiting for a new sports/action camera to replace my 1D II. Another 5 months for PMA to see if 1D III is replaced!
I don't know whether to laugh or cry. And only the one lens again.
Nikon will probably be relieved. ...Show more →
still think there is another body in the wings
possible 7d,16.7 MP 5-8 fps,no video

I too am quite disappointed in the frame rate. I was expecting 5-6 fps. The sluggish frame rate is the only thing about my 5D that I find unacceptable for my types of shooting. I ended up buying a 1d2n to use for wildlife and whales but I'd liek more MPs and FF. I was really hoping to be able to use the 5D2 at at least 5 fps for a decent compromise/balance between landscapes/still lifes and critters.
Ah well. At least I don't feel like I need to rush out and buy a 5D2 now. Maybe I'll wait until PMA to make any purchase decisions. I'm getting tired of waiting for a 3D tho - I've been waiting since the 5D was originally announced.

Where exactly would they price it?
The 50D is nearly what you just mentioned, PLUS video. The R&D makes it cost prohibitive to release two cameras with nearly identical specs. This isn't BMW or Lexus where the same car can have different trim.

I cannot imagine how EF-S lenses will work properly on a FF. It must be a copy-paste error by DPR. And its now correct on the specs sheet on DPR.
Doesn't Nikon's D3 do this? They just "turn off" part of the sensor.
The only possible difference with the 5DII might have to do with mirror clearance,

the least you can do is get your specs right. it is not 4.9fps, it is 3.9 which does make a difference to some people. it is also not weather sealed and so far it looks like there have been no serious AF improvement.

$2,700 ... OK ... I'm going to get one. Good balance between features, IQ and price for me. I just wish they had updated the 24-70 with IS. The 17-55 is one perk of shooting with a xxD.

for less than HALF the price of a 1dsIII that i was lining up to get...heck yea i'll get the 5DII and the savings will be put towards upgrading from 1dII to 1dIII. w00t!

I suppose the strategy has been to fortify their WA pro grade offerings:
The 16-35 MkII has certainly done that, I happen to like mine a lot.
The 14 MkII some folks like better than the old one....alas, not enough user reports on it though.
And now the 24L II......updating the lens which has been really well liked all along.
Might turn out to be a kind of 85L MkI vs. 85L MkII scenario.

They could have given you 6fps, full weather sealing, and a serious AF improvement for another $2k. But then everyone would have complained about the price.
You have to look at this camera in the rest of Canon's lineup. You have the 450D, 50D, 5DII, 1DIII, and 1DsIII. All serve a different purpose. The 450D is a consumer camera. The 50D is a prosumer camera. The 1DIII is a sports camera. The 1DsIII is a hybrid of sports and landscaping. The 5DII incorporates the best of all worlds (FF, 21.1mp, high ISO, and reasonable fps) in a convenient package that is priced competitively.
When are people going to learn that cameras are not produced for individual needs, but rather the overall needs of the intended user?
If you want higher FPS and improved AF, go buy a 1DsIII. Otherwise, switch to Nikon if you're so unhappy.
