Hi everyone.
Looking for clarifaction on this. New Nikon literature, says non AI, will not fit or work on these two D bodies. Information from this site (in chart form,) shows they fit these two bodies, no metering, sunny 16 or hand held meter. Whos right ? Nikon or internet formns ? Nikon SLR cameras and Lens Compatibility Chart, from nikonians.org/nikon/slr-lens
It will fit, will it work is based on how you define work lol. It will not meter and will not autofocus. People here will say no autofocus means don't work, ehhh to each their own ( love my AF-D glass on a d40 personally even though its manual focus). Nikon I guess is being conservative since the d40 is an intro camera and doesn't want new people buying difficult to use lenses. Then dealing with customer compliants .
No meter and no AF, unless you have a lightmeter handy and the skills to use it effectively, I would say Nikon made the right choice in calling it a paperweight for the 40/x and saying it doesn't work...
Also for some Pre AI glass one obviously will not work. Forget the series but if you try to insert it you will break your mirror isnce there is an obvious protrusion from it that says don't even think about trying to putting me on this body lol...
no - it will fit on if you jam it a bit but should then not have any stop down action so it is worse than just not metering. AT past wide open or a stop down you will not be able to see. I have also in the past been told by a technician that it can damage the D70 due to the tab on the side of non-ai lenses pushing against your metering tab. Perhaps there is something that is different about the D40? could be.
There is a good place that can update some lenses to AI. This is the link: http://www.aiconversions.com/
He is very good and very reasonable.
The reason crackwell, is so despised is that he gives answers that he has little clue about. Comically wrong, except there is the suspicion that there are those unfortunate beginners that actually think his is more than the slurred boasts of a drunk college freshman, giving opinions about things he is with no experience on.
Neat. He seems to have a blurb about all of this in respect to D4's and others. There do seem to be body differences and the D40 at least will not be damaged. ( many can be ) http://www.aiconversions.com/d70etc.htm
I don't get the responses here. Non-AI lenses do mount just fine on the D40/D40x/D60. No conversion is needed. Automatic aperture control does work. There is no metering, but there's no need for an external meter either. You can use the LCD screen with the flashing highlight feature to meter most shots. Or, if you need more precision, you can use the histogram. Really, after a while you just do it by instinct and use those for an occasional confirmation only.

I'd like to see you try putting an old nikkor-o (non-AI) lens on a D40/D60. non-ai lenses don't have a separate aperture ring with AI tabs, some have a shrouds that seriously damage the mirror box.

I should have guessed the OP was referring to collector rangefinder lenses from the 1950's (and probably invasive fisheyes too). But then that's what people like you are here for..
