Maybe a 3rd flash behind bride... Great shot in post #10,

Joe - Ed Pignol has a great response to this on his blog. You can easily use just one light, but two lights helps you to get more light and a faster recharge time on the flashes. Maybe unnecessary, but very helpful. I'll be using just one light for now - hopefully I can up my game down the road!
Anyone use two vivitars? I know it's always great to have extra flashes, but I have 2 580EXIIs and I feel like putting that extra $600 for two more toward something more useful - like an L prime.
Deb,
Thanks, I wasnt sure about that but now I can see what you mean about the 2 flash units..
I have 2 sigma units and a sunpak 622 old unit. now all I need is someone to hold the flash units for me...lol
I am also saving my $$ for better glass.... I am using the Tamron 17-50 2.8 but want to go with the Canon 28-70.. then step up my flash game too!

I'm building one, but I'm going to use older manual flashes...either Vivitar 285s or Nikon SBs (24s, 26, 28s, etc). If you're firing them with Pocket Wizards, you're in manual mode anyway so it shouldn't matter much what flash you use. If you want to use ETTL radio transmitters, better flashes might make it worth the upgrade though...

I usually use PWs. I find the line of site doesn't work so hot. But I guess it could be handy at times. Decisions!
we use the radiopoppers but may get the new pocket wizards. the ability to use ttl when needed is awesome.
so another option instead of cheap manula flashes which are great, get some older used ttl flashes. we have 3 sb-600's we use strickly for a light stick. 2 on the stick and 3rd as a backup just in case. paid $120 for each of them. not bad fr ttl
Yep. I only have one now, but I used to have several. The Vivitar 285HV is a great, modestly priced flash. The manual adjustment of output power is easy and fast, and they're built solidly.
I don't know how much longer they'll be available new, though. The company that bought Vivitar has itself been bought, and I don't think bargain manual flashes are in the new comany's plans.
I'm going to grab two or three more while I know I can.

You should be able to get used ones for a long time though...they made them for 30 or so years. I've got five 285s and one 283, and I got all of them used off ePay for around $70 or so. The 283 was actually free since I got it with something else. A couple of them needed some clean up after old batteries exploded in them, but so far they've all worked just fine. I guess you're always taking a chance on an old piece of equipment like that, but at least backups are cheap . And I think the components they used in the old ones are probably better than the new ones. Since I've got five of them, I'm thinking about taking a pair of them and putting them on a double mount and just leaving them there.
