So I have been looking forward to today ALL WEEK, to FINALLY get to put the D700 through its paces on a real subject instead of stuff around my house... youth hockey.
The game is out of town and I get there early enough to find out... I accidentally grabbed my 300mm f4 AF-S instead of my 70-200VR. Those who own both know that (1) they have the same case and (2) the one you want for shooting amateur hockey in dark arenas is definitely NOT the 300 f4.
I'm dying. I was looking forward to the first game of the year and using my D700 so bad, and now I'm done.
Well, even though 300 is a little long even on FX and f4 wide open is not wide open enough, I started firing away and jacking up the ISO and you know what? Seems fairly usable on the LCD.
So long story almost short... I got home, loaded a bunch up in NX2 and did a couple tweaks and I'm impressed. The D700 saved the day and I've got some images for the team...
You get enough great hockey photos for 'em that they ought to be grateful anyway. And besides, you certainly pulled it out of the fire. Love #1 and #5 especially, but not a bad one in the bunch you posted. So the rest of 'em oughta be OK too.

I commented there, but will say it here. Excellent.
Really like the last one too. We'll have to all chip in and get you a 10.5mm fish!
I actually have the 10.5 - although since getting the D700 I'm trying to find a trade for a 16... but I'd probably confuse the fisheye with a teleconverter or something next time...
My wife has been right all along... I am an idiot.

Now I just can't wait to try this thing out with the right lens.
(ps. Yes I know I may have mixed a D300 shot or two in there, using the 150mm f2.8 Sigma or 24-70 f2.8 - also not the ideal hockey lenses...)...Show more →
I don't understand why you spent all that money on a D700 when you posted awesome pic with your D300 & 70-200

Hey thanks Dan... and yeah, it progressed quickly after the first time I played around with one at my dealer. I kinda fell in love with the capability pretty quick since a lot of what I do is action / low-light. Tough combo.

Well, I still will use and abuse the D300 regularly, it's certainly not being shelved or anything. What I did was replace the D2H with a D700, since I generally use 2 bodies to shoot sports with anyway. And while I loved my D2H (as you likely know) the D300/D700 is such a seamless combination and also great compliment for reach and low-light, I really do get the best of all worlds. I'm actually pretty darn happy about my setup (although that D2H still has a soft spot with me somehow).
Thanks for the kind words, from me and my D300!
Now I just need someone to "lose" a 300mm f2.8 on my front porch!
