p.1 #1 · wait for D800

I currently have a D3, and a D2x as a backup. I have been thinking about getting a D700 to replace the D2x as backup, but have been hearing talk of the D800 coming, what will this imaginary camera have over the D3/D700 tandem? I am not in a hurry to replace the D2x and I wonder if I am better off waiting for what ever is coming over the mountain.

Is that the one that will be Wii enabled? Or is itthe one with the phone? Oh, so many rumors. I can't keep them straight. Somebody PLEASE stop the carousel, it's just spinning faster and faster, out of control!

WHAT D800?

Let me get this right. You are asking us if you are better off to wait for a camera that hasn't even been announced and to tell you what features it might have that you don't have now You came to the right place as all of us here have crystal balls and read palms in our spare time. You can't be serious. If you keep waiting for the next great camera you will never do anything. Just go shoot pictures. If you like the D700 go grab one as it is a great camera.

The D3X will be released first in 2009, full-format sensor with possible D300 pixel density. This is also the maximum amount of pixels we will get, since optics are the limiting factor now.

The D700X or D800 will be released in the end of 2009 or 2010, same amount of pixels as the D3X.

A few new features, but nothing spectacular.

I think you should wait for D9000. It's going to make the D800 look like a toy.

+1 - that's probably the most likely chain of events. Also, keep in mind that just because it's announced doesn't mean you can get it! A lot of people waited a long time for a D3.

Hmm, I've been preoccupied with other things lately - is the new speculation on a D800? Man, it hasn't been more than a few months since the D700 was the hot topic here. I guess we are just never satisfied. I've got to sit back and take a breath with the pace of things around here.

Sure, Canon's got the highest MP count, but I think the D700 does just fine too! I had thought this was just wishful thinking when I saw a post about the D800 a bit ago, but people here are talking like its a done deal. I think I'll just go shoot some pics with my outdated D700! Still pleases me, by the way.

If they do release a new camera, judging by the stock at my local store I don't think people will have any difficulty getting one. High end cameras are not moving that well, at least in my neck of the woods.

I just rechecked all my camera rumors. The D800 is the one that has a complete built-in foldout swing set for the kids to play on during boring family shoots.

Let's get real. I wish this kind of insanity would stop because these kinds of posts are really a waste of everyone's time (although the jokes are pretty funny!)

Nikon has released three bodies a year (in different lines) for the last three years. The D700 was announced on 7/1 and was in retail about 7/20. It's not getting replaced anytime soon - they keep eggs in the grocery store longer! IMO, the earliest announcement for a D800 will be around November of 2009, 14 months from now.

You guys want them to release replacement models in less time than it takes to design and print the packaging! Don't compare camera production to computers. Many computer model changes are nothing more than switching out a plug and play processor, the switch of the 3rd party video card from one model to another, adding more memory to an existing slot and changing the nameplate. While I do think the camera industry will eventually move to a model of continuous improvement and more modular production techniques, we're not quite there yet.

Wait for a couple of days before you die, then buy a camera. That will be the best you could ever have. The trick is finding out when you will die...

On a more serious note...how the f*** would anyone know what an imaginary camera would have when the D700 has just been released?

Thanks, Martin. I needed that sanity check. I really could care less if I have the latest and greatest (okay, so maybe I care a little) but if Nikon followed these rumors we would all be broke if we were inclined to try to keep up. Besides, the D700 is the best camera body I've ever owned, even if Canon or Nikon have or will release a better one. The D300 held that honor before that, and is a close second now.

Actually though, I do enjoy the jokes as well.

David

Oh wait...this is getting better. So you have a D3 and thinking whether you should get a D700 to replace the D2X...right. So why did you buy the D3 anyway, you could have waited for the D4!

I need to take a break from this forum...

David, you should just get another D3. That's the best companion for your current D3. If you want a smaller cam, then just get the D700.

Sometimes I wonder if these type of posts are troll posts, because really does anyone actually think this and then sit down and type it out?

Dave,

You're not explaining your motive here. Why do you even need to upgrade your backup? I looked at your portfolio and I think your current setup is fine as is. You're not shooting the type of high volume work that would require two identical bodies. The D2x is more than sufficient for the few weeks of use needed should the D3 be out of commission.

Nikon will come out with a high-resolution pro body sometime in the near future, that much is a given. You can make a pretty safe bet that a prosumer body with the same sensor will follow. One of these future high-resolution bodies will make a lot more sense for your type of work than does the D700.

Why not wait for the D5000? This is a pointless thread.
