p.1 #1 · Going to NY..suggestions??

well, here is the deal. Call me crazy or what you will but I am flying from Birmingham, Al to Hartford, Ct and then driving to Petersham, Ma to pick up a car. Not just any car but a pretty minty fresh '85 535is. Since this is a photography forum, Ill spare you my interest in the car

and get to my questions or advice im seeking. After we, me and my dad, pick up the car on 9/11 we are driving it back to Ny city, staying the night and then waking up and spending all day in the city. I have never been further north then NC so this will be fun and esp going to the city that suppposedly never sleeps. I have looked up all kinds of one day itenaries just to get an idea of what to do. I cant exactly remeber where we are staying at but I think it is close central park.

So I guess what I'm asking is what do you all suggest as must see or things to do in a day. Things that often get over looked. As of now, my 5d and some kind of film camera is coming with me. Im not sure i want the weight of my 1n or not but it will probably be the one in my bag. Im definately taking shots of the car in all the places we stop.

So any ideas or suggestions, offer them up. Im flying out on Sep. 11th. Ooohh Scarry!!

Well, course the logical place would be B&H

The WTC memorial would be worth a look. If you have the time you can walk the streets of NYC and see all kinds of interesting things - just keep your belongings close!! Don't think I'd want to have thousands of dollars worth of equipment hanging from my neck...

i know that was the thing i was worrying about. Im not really sure what the crime rate is or if there really is any there at all for that type of stuff. I always see pictures taken from NY so I would imgaine i would be safe. I would love to go to B&H's superstore but it is kinda like taking a kid into a candystore and not letting him get any candy

. However I do need a body cap. Cha-ching $$.
Has anyone had any bad expierences walking around with your camera in NY?

Just be aware of your surroundings and aware of your gear and you'll be fine.

I shoot in the city a fair amount without issue.

There are so many 'togs walking around NYC with DSLRs now,
it'll make yer head spin......just be smart...

I don't think you'd have any huge worry about street crime, using common sense of course. However, NYC is not a driver's city. I don't know that it's necessarily reasonable to expect to drive around from major sightseeing/tourist/photo op to another and find convenient (or cheap) or photographically iconic parking places.

If I were going to NY, I would definitely take in one of the Circle tours, a boat ride around Manhattan.

As far as the crime scene goes, if you stay around manhattan you should be ok. There's a lot of tourist flashing their big slr all around but I prefer to keep mine in my "messenger style bag" for safety and pull it out for shots. I'll say good places to shoot would be Central Park since you're there, Time Square, Soho and Greenwich are also fun but you probably know the picture since you've seen photos already... A good tip would be to take the PATH (subway to Jersey City) so you could get some great shots of the city from the other side of the river sometimes around golden hour and after dawn. As far as driving in NYC I don't reccommend it, its a pain in the ass, you'll get stuck in traffic and won't be able to park. Be smart and take the subway (BTW don't take photos in the subway they hate it). The double deck tour is good also and of course the Empire State building. Take an extra hour of your time to stop by B&H store to look it up its pretty amazing. A fun thing to photograph in NYC is the people...so many strange faces... Ohhhh, look out for the naked cowboy! There's also a naked cowgirl now but she's like 70yrs old.. sad, sad. Happy shooting!!!

Thanks for the comments so far. We are staying near time square so we will be close to alott of things. I was really interested in the people and the subways. Why do they not like casual shots of the subway and such?

How do you spell "T E R R O R I S T"...

They (NYC) are very wary of people taking photos of any place that might be a target... Sad that anyone should have to worry about that but....
