not that it means anything per se, but Amazon now has 35Ls in stock, after being out of stock for awhile -- in addition to their third party sellers. This means there still are some in the distribution chain.

I love my current 24L, but must say I would consider an IS version. I didn't think IS would be useful on a wide, until I tried night photography at parties, bars, etc. using the 17-55 IS on the wide end. Really, camera shake is eliminated as a factor. Your limiting factor become the movement of the subject, though I find motion blur from a subject contributes to the feel of the image more often than camera shake ever does.

Actually, Sony do. Take a look at their current lens line up, 35mm f1.4, 50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.4 and a 135mm f1.8. It all looks very compeptative. Why do you think Canon is more scared of Sony than nikon?
Canon is certainly aware of Sony.
But to get back to extreme fast primes, the Sony brand 35 and 50 mm suck IMHO ....
85 and 135 is third party glass so a different ballgame (but not better than Canon 85L and 135L)
I doubt it will have IS. It would add a lot of weight and cost with little value. You don't need it at this focal length especially with a max aperture of f1.4.

OK now I'm confused (as usual) I've checked the referred list twice and I see a 24 f/1.4 L MK II, but not 35 f/1.4 L II. What am I missiing here?
Ok, so as a person actually looking to buy this lens within the next month, is there ANYTHING even remotely concrete, IE not an armchair expert, saying there is a MK2 version of this lens coming out in the next few months? Anything at all? Or is it all pure internet fuelled coincidence?

There is absolutely nothing concrete that says one will be coming out in the next few months. However Canon will very very likely be making announcements on new lenses on February 19th so you'd be well advised to wait the 16 days if you can. Note however that even if a 35L replacement is announced on the 19th:
1. It won't be available for at least 2 months (probably closer to 3 or even 4).
2. It will probably cost $1699 (or whatever the UK price of 24L II is) like the new 24L II does
There is little wrong with the current 35L, the only thing I would say they need to address is the CA. If the new 35L can have as little CA as the 24L II does, that would be awesome.
I bolted one to the 5DMK2 when i first took it for a test run and certainly didn't find me wanting for anything at all! Absolutely stunning peice of glass as far as i'm concerned!
Canon don't do this to me, I just got one and am saving up for the 24L II now
As for optical performance, sharpness imo is flawless on a APS-C Sensor. I daresay it's as sharp as my 85L II wide open, possibly sharper even...(Both are very sharp though)
It would be nice to get better bokeh though - I suspect rounded aperture blades would be a nice upgrade
Also sealing would be nice, at the moment there are gaping holes in the back of the lens, and it feels quite cheap for a L lens
