p.1 #1 · Course Correction

So I made a mistake. I was getting frustrated lugging around the extra weight of the 1Ds, batteries, and monster charger. "Get a 5D," I told myself. "You've always wanted one. The batteries are tiny, the charger's tiny, without the grip, it's small and light. It's quiet. It'll perform better above ISO 400. What's not to love?" And I did it. I dumped my beautiful copy of the 1Ds and acquired a 5D. Great camera, too. Lovely images. I completely understand why everyone fell in love with it, and why people are so rabid about the upgrade- it will have to be significant to top that camera's performance.

There was just one problem, though. It wasn't the 1Ds. So today I traded the 5D off to a really nice fellow FMer here in Colorado (thanks again, Alan- let me know when you're ready to try out the 85L) for another sweet copy of the 1Ds. I shot with it all afternoon (mostly pictures of the dogs, so I won't bore you with them) and it was like having my best friend back. Okay, that's overstating it. It was more like I'd been using someone else's computer, and while there were certainly things it did better and faster, it just never felt right.

So how about it, FM community? What gear changes did you reverse that others might consider crazy?

I had a 1Dmk3... nice camera... I didn't mind too much about the weight... then I had to make a trip over sea and didn't want to take my "heavy" 1Dmk3 so I bought a used 20D and 24-105... While I was on my trip, I convinced myself that I don't really need 1D.... So, when I retruned back home, I sold my 1Dmk3 and purchased a new 40D... I tried.... I tried it with a battery grip.... With the battery grip, it is as heavy as my 1D... 40D focus is nice... but not as nice as my 1D... I purchased a used 1Dmk3 and it is on its way to me... can't wait...

In the first week of exchanging 28-105 (the 3.5-4.5) for 24-70L I was distinctly unimpressed, it wasn't noticeably sharper at smaller than f/5.6, and I had less zoom to play with, and it was H-E-A-V-Y, however it all sort of clicked after my first wedding and I realised just how nice the colours are straight from camera, and how, while the f/5.6-8 might not have been better, it was 90% as sharp at 2.8, and I've never gone anywhere without it since, there's not a single lens in the world I'd replace it with.

Great thread! Sorry I can not add my experiences. I Used 5 canon Cams. The last was always the best. Concerning Lenses: I never sold one that was good for another one that might have been better. My 28-105 is fine. My 70-200 4,0 IS is the world best lense anyway. My 50mm 1.4 is not mavelless, but okay. When D700 came out I thought about changing. But I trashed the thought. My 30D body is great. Because it supports lenses, Nikon does not offer. So what. No Camera does make pics without lens.
