Tried my 1yr old in the living room today but, he wouldn't hold still. Grabbed my 6 yr old since I was all set up. 85mm 1.2, Tripod, Live View on Laptop with Manual Focus.

Live view on laptop? Tripod? Doesn't seem like a very easy setup to move around. However you got a good picture. Glad you stopped it down a little, I get tired of only seeing eyes in focus.

Yes, it was a huge pain in the a$%. Even my wife mentioned that. Thanx for noticing the stop down. It was very deliberate.

Thanx for the compliment. Believe it or not it was just dusk light coming into our family room. I angled him so there was some highlights on his right side but that's it. Honestly, I dom't know what high key means in this context.

Oh, also, thought it'd be interesting to mention that I used my 18% Gray card to set exposure and custom white balance here. This photo has no PP except for settings already on camera.

the results are nice, i and i guess thats what ultimately counts!

my two nits are:

1. wish he didnt have his hand on his mouth...looks like a good smile covered up. if you insist on the hand, i would have shot it wider.

2. skin tones look off...too orange.

i do have some questions regarding your set up. why go through all that hassle to get live view?

also a tip...get your shutter speed up for more consistant results. 1/25th is a very slow shutter speed for people. if your boy moves the slightest bit, you will have an OOF shot.

with all that said, good end results!

Were you just experimenting with live view? Doesn't seem like you would need that in this situation.

Very sharp for 1/25 - you're definitely taking chances as noted at that shutter speed.

Don't you just love the 85L

Regarding the hand and composition; I struggled with this. There were about four shots I liked none of them perfect. All needed some compromise. The issues were, his hair is a flippin train wreck right now. Plus, background was not great pulled back. I liked this shot because eyes were sharp and background was pure. Here's another shot I liked and you can see that, yes, no hand but, heterogeneous background and bad hair.

Also, yes, I agree. Picture probably is a tad orange. However, he does have a pretty good glow going from being outside all summer.

Also, regarding the laoptop live view, I wanted to experiment with this option as I never used it before. I was hoping to be able to zoom in10x and manual focus for perfect focus. It worked pretty well but, not very practical in the field obviously.

Regarding the shutter speed, I felt forced to this exposure as I wanted to keep the background pretty blurred. The white you see are actually cabinets in our family room. But, you're right. That would be tough to use all the time.
