This is a very nice camera. It does have very good image quality, but you need good light. It reminds me of the 100-400mm. Both behave similarly.

However, I came from a 1DMIII, so take this with a grain of salt as I am kind of spoiled...

that looks like mine. Its all about proper or at least decent exposure.

I dont see it guys,
I have tested the camera, and @ the highest asa setting there is some banding , however at 6400 and below it doesn't happen. I think its imperative to expose correctly as well.

Exposing correctly and quality of light is definitely a must...sRaw1 helps a lot too if you don't require the extra mpix in those environments. I rarely take high ISO shots that require 15mpix...However, in the studio or for large group shots the extra mpix is definitely a help. Typically, I can shoot those at low ISO though. So for me, in low light conditions, I shoot sRaw1 mostly... Of course, I haven't used my 50D all that much in the last 4-6 weeks that I have owned it, so the jury is still out for me. Still evaluating various shooting situations and settings.

One thing I do know.. TURN THAT ALO CR@P OFF unless you use DPP to do your conversions from raw. Many of the other non-Canon Raw converters have difficulty understanding that ALO flag and it causes exposure problems during it's initial rendering of the raw file.

extremely easily

even with average glass it does at least a tiny bit better

I'm debating between the 40D and the 50D. The price difference is not that great, so the issue is which camera is better for my needs as an advanced amateur. Mostly I do "people" photography and prefer to do candid and event photography, but I do some landscape work. I've heard the additional resolution in the small format has an effect on color saturation, which would be important for doing landscape work. I like the live view feature upgrades on the 50D, but don't know how much I'd use them. The higher LCD resolution sounds useful for composing.
Any input on these issues and any other advantages/disadvantages comparing the two cameras would be appreciated.

The 50D please. The 40D if finance dictates only.
I had a 40D and see no saturation problems in the 50D.
Advantage:
Cropping power in the increased MP. Your hard drive will feel the weight though.
The better LCD is very nice.
The lens AF fine tune feature at the ready just in case.
User interface to me is better.
I have yet to use live view.

Yes, I had the problem after updating the firmware last week. I was downtown DC shooting last weekend and switching between 5 different lens. It did not happen while I switching between lens but when I went to one of the local parks to shoot birds and just using the 300mm lens it happened a couple of times but has not since. I never had the problem before so I don't know if the upgrade caused it or me switching between 5 different lens. I was testing out the following lens.

Canon 300mm f4L IS
Canon 70-200mm f4l non-IS
Canon 28-135mm IS USM
Canon 50mm 1.8
Sigma 50-500mm non-IS

I bought a 50D in mid-September and have yet to experience an ERR01. Mine shipped with the 1.0.1 FW and I updated to 1.0.3 without incident. I've owned a 10D, 20D, 40D and 5D and haven't had an ERR01 on those either. Perhaps it has something to do with the weather? It's always about 80 degrees F here in Honolulu. I don't changes lenses a lot and have only used the 17-55, 70-200L and 300 4L on it. Utterly reliable kit and no complaints other than the massive price drop since September!

After reading some reviews I don't think I would upgrade from my 40D to 50D.
Nothing impressive.

Why Canon had to build a better LCD on this 50D model ? they could have done it already on the 40D. They don't build a complete good camera because they want us to keep spending thousands of dollar on little upgrades.

The not so sharp LCD on the 40D is one of the things Canon did that I still don't understand.

I'm not a rebel without a cause, I'm just dissapointed on how these little upgrades have cost us money.

Not everyone upgrades with every iteration.

I haven't bought a XXD model since the 20D. The 50D represents some nice upgrades from that.

I bought it mainly as a backup sports body for my MKIII (which has the same LCD as your 40D) and to get a little more reach when needed.

I agree. I have my 20D and finally yesterday i've bought my 50D!!! For me is a great upgrade. For 40D user's probably not.

I already took some shot's and i will post some when i have some time! One great thing is the automatic recognition of the lenses! At least my 70-200 F4L and 24-105 F4L were!

I'm one more happy owner of a 50D!!!

I have both a 40D and 50D. Now the 50D LCD is nicer mainly due to the anti-glare coating (increases contrast). Honestly, at arms length where most of us have to view a LCD, the extra rez is all but invisible. If I use a magnifying glass I can see the extra detail but who has time for chimpin'? I bet you can buy a 50D LCD cover plate and install it on your 40D and enjoy less glare (I'm thinking of doing it). The main reason to buy a 50D is for the 50% more pixels and micro-adjustments. If those don't tickle your pickle why whine about the other improvements? That's just sour grapes and silly. Nearly everybody tweaks their products and you can't expect them to hold back so your feelings won't be hurt.

This reminds me of the Russian weight lifter from the sixties - he was constantly breaking his own records by 1 kilogram. That's because he got a bonus from his govt. every time he broke a record. Camera companies are the same way. Incremental improvements keep the $$ coming in. I don't understand why anyone would expect a revolutionary camera instead of an evolutionary camera every time an updated model is introduced.
Same thing with wanting M III specs on an XXD model. They have to keep some separation of specs so that people will buy the more expensive cameras.

Got a 50D yesterday for a back up for me but also for someone else to use mostly. My question is the AF/ON button on the back. You can't use that button in Basic mode? I set it in creative then brought it down to basic and the AF was back on the shutter button, am I doing something wrong or won't it work in basic?

I think that button only works with the live view mode and that is not available in basic mode.
