We are having several repetitive threads started about Canon's new 50D. To simplify things try making this a master thread discussion for this camera. We may merge some other 50D threads into this one. Thanks for your cooperation. I have posted some of the camera features below:
Canon has just released the EOS 50D which is an upgrade from the Canon 40D. This new digital SLR offers a 15.1 MP CMOS sensor, 6.3 f/s shooting, and a faster DIGIC 4 image processor. Here is are some of the 50D feaftures:
• New 15.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor with improved noise reduction, wide range ISO 100-3200 (H1: 6400, H2: 12800), 14-bit conversion for smooth color tones and gradations.
• Next generation DIGIC 4 Image Processor for faster processing, 6.3 fps up to 90 JPEGS using UDMA CF cards; 60 consecutive JPEGS or 16 RAW using standard CF cards.
• 3.0-inch Clear View LCD (920,000 dots/VGA) with multiple coatings for improved viewing and smudge-resistant protection.
• Enhanced Live View shooting includes Face Detection Live mode.
• 9 cross-type high-precision sensors for accurate target subject acquisition and diagonal center cross-type AF point with f/2.8 and faster lenses.
• New Lens Peripheral Illumination Correction setting to automatically even the brightness across the image.
• Updated EOS Integrated Cleaning System with a fluorine coating for better resistance to dust.
• Creative Auto goes a step beyond full auto with on screen setting display.
• HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) output for displaying full high-resolution images on a High Definition TV.
• Compatible with over 60 Canon EF/EF-S lenses and most EOS System accessories.

You forgot the most important part:
"AF Microadjustment C.Fn III-7
+/- 20 steps
Adjust all lenses by same amount
Adjust up to 20 lenses individually"
This is the best feature ever! It should keep the measurbators happily shooting newspapers, brick walls, and AF targets for several months at least!
Does this mean that the camera "remembers" your adjustments when you put on a different lens? That would have saved me around $300 so far in lens focus fixing if I understand this correctly.
12800? i would like to see how usable the 3200 is because its not very on the 40D. i have a 1d2/40D combo and was thinking about upgrading the 40D to a 1d3, but i will gladly save 2k and just get a 50D
I have found the phantom 50D & 5D MkII threads amusing. But seeing these specs compared to the 40D, plus Canon's assertion it is designed for wildlife and sports shooting, makes me now want to wait for the mysterious 5D upgrade.
I love my 5D but the AF and fps are a little wanting for sports. So I was reviewing the various 40D threads on performance. I don't really care about the extra megapixels, I just wanted the better AF and frame rate the 40D had. This upgrade adds nothing to it, so I'll be interested in image quality reviews and the street the price. And of course what they do about the 5D (if anything).
The value of this camera over the 40D will be decided almost completely by its performance at ISO3200+. The test will be downscaling a 50D image to 10MPixel and comparing to a 40D.
Personally, I won't even raise an eyebrow unless it gives us at least a stop more sensitivity with equivalent noise. And even then I'm iffy, because the 40D's AF starts to fall apart in conditions where I would use ISO3200 anyway, and there are no claimed AF improvements.

I love my 40D and am not planning on upgrading, but can someone explain what this feature does and why it would be helpful/in what situations?
It's to stop gearheads & pixel peepers from complaining that their lens is soft?

Or better still, uprezzing the 40D file to 15 megapixel, so that you're not throwing away the 50D's advantage in detail resolution.
