p.1 #1 · Help--1dmk2 Firewire Issue

Just picked up a used 1d2 and I can't get the firewire connection to work. So far I have:

1.Tried 3 different computers: 2 pc's with 4pin connections on both sides, and 1 mac using the canon 6pin-4pin cable.

2.Wiped the software and drivers off and reinstalled twice from canons site.

When I plug the usb in, the computer recognizes it as new hardware and the ~ symbol shows up on the camera's rear info screen. When I plug the firewire in and turn the camera on, nothing happens, no symbol, no change on the computer. I've tried rescanning through the device manager while it's plug in and there is nothing.

I'm starting to think it's a bad port on the camera since I can't get any response. Any idea's.

You have to use the right software...can't remember exactly what the solution was, but this happened to me too a long time ago when first hooking up the camera...it was an easy fix tho, just a matter of opening the right program and it will read just fine...I think you have use ZoomBrowser or some wierd thing. Someone here will know exactly but it is not a big deal.

Ya, let me add that every time, EVU, Eos utility, and zoombrowser all told me that it couldn't detect a camera or the function I needed was simply gray and unable to be selected.

Use the cable that came in the box for downloads and remote shooting. What is that...4 pin to USB maybe? Or maybe 4 pin to 4 pin? You'll get it. I'd try it here but sold that camera a while back. Pretty sure it is Zoombrowser for that camera...EOS Ulility for other 1D bodies...

On a mac "Image Capture" will do the job but you need to manually open the application. Itīs a small app that comes standard will all macs.

Thats good info, thanks. I'll borrow the mac again and try.

I'm still worried because when it's all hooked up, I've never had any change on the computer (didn't see the camera on the computer) or on the camera like I do when I hook a usb up. Even without drivers or anything, you still get the connection symbol on the back of the camera or something, right?

Just call Canon tomorrow...get the info from the source and forget all this going back and forth, a 10 min free call and you are ready to roll. Why stress about it...there is nothing wrong with your camera...I would bet.

I live in China right now and won't be back to the states for a while. Calling Canon isn't the best option for me right now.

If you are getting the connected symbol on the back of the camera then the camera knows you are connected, it could be a corrupted device driver in the pc.

BTW I have never been able to maintain a good connection with any of my 1-series cameras using firewire, always dropped out quickly due to bad connections, by far the best was using the Canon cable that came wit the camera (the one with the big firewire connector) but still far from reliable, you may want to check this.

Are you using the correct cable?

The PC will recognise the camera via USB (IIRC) but you need the black firewire cable to change the settings using eos utility.

Could it be the "well-known" problem with broken drivers?? According to Phase1 and several others, the firewire drivers were changed in sp2/3 rendering several applications inoperative. Solution from Phase1 was to revert back to drivers from sp1a.

Note this not just for Phase1 cameras, this affects all units transferring isochronous data and certain types of chip-sets.

Contact me if you want to try and I'll mail the files or you can d/l from Phase1
link: http://www.phaseone.com/HOME/Content/Support/Article.aspx?articleid=1696&LanguageID=1&layoutid=SupportSite%20-%20Main

This saved my butt, and allowed access to hardware using firewire but not camera related though

Cheers

WebDog,

thanks for the info. I AM using XP SP2 so it could easily be the problem. The zip file at the bottom of the Phase1 page is what I'm looking for, right? I'll follow the instructions and give it a try. Thanks for the lead bro.

It can also be a broken firewire port on the PCB in the camera, farely common, especially for studio shooters that shoot tethered and triip over the cable, the connector in the camera breaks easily

Marcus,
yes thats the one! They included some neat bat-files that even will restore drivers to SP2/3 if you ever need that

Good Luck and keep us posted on the progress!

Well, I got the SP1 XP drivers install, bought a better quality 4pin-4pin firewire.

I've got it to at least show up on the computer now. It makes the noise when I connect it and I can see it in My Computer. Haven't gotten past that yet but I'm still working on it...

Marcus,

When you plugging your MK2 into the Firewire port, try this step: Before plugging the MK2 in, press the display button, then plug in the MK2. This step does not matter, if you are using Mac or XP. Once plugged in, you may get an error message saying: "display is busy, clear the display in order to continue", or something to that effect. Go ahead and clear the display, and see if EOS Utility opens up directly into the virtual window of the MK2. It does it direct on my Mac, with the method I told you. On my PC, I do the same thing with the display, then once I clear it, the option for the window in Utility becomes available.

Hope this helps.

I had a corrupted driver a few weeks ago with the same symptoms you had... just reset the driver nd it worked fine.

Well, shoot, the problem now is that when I cleaned all of the canon stuff off, I didn't realize that it could all be reloaded EXCEPT EOS Viewer Utility that was on there from when my 20D a few years ago. So, I thought I'd just use my 400D discs and reload it from the disc, but it turns out that the 400D didn't come with EVU any more.

So, I'm stuck now trying to get EVU back on my computer.

Someone said they changed the personal settings by clicking properties in My Computer, but I just get an error message when I do that. Is EOS Utility able to change the settings? It's all grayed out right now. Thanks.

Yes EOS Utility does allow the changing of personal functions. You can download EOS Utility, from the Canon Driver Download site Here

Hmmm, well, I have EOS Utility but almost everything is grayed out on it except the Monitor Folder option. So I just need to figure out why it isn't working. Thanks for the help everyone!!!!

Rockies Photo-what you were saying about the hitting the display and everything doesn't apply since I'm using XP right? Thanks

I have three N bodies - I use the firewire for tether every weekend - but I only need one body for that. Of the three of them, 2 of them tether just fine, meaning I have all the software and drivers and such. Then there is one, that I have not ever gotten to tether via the same computers that the other two tether correctly.

So there might be an issue with the port or chips inside?

Reminds me... I should send that body off to get that issue fixed!

Hammy.

I got it thank to all you guys. It is finicky to say the least. The firewire has to have some light pressure pushing it up to connect, and EOS Utility will only show the options if it opens automatically when the camera connects. If I connect the camera and then try to open Utility, the options are grayed out.

Now I have to figure out how to register the personal function groups so I can switch between them out in the field.

Thanks!

It seems you are having precisely the same issue I had with all my 1-series up to the 1Ds3, quite how you are supposed to use that tethered in a pro environment and impress clients I don't know.

Setting the PF's is easy once you're 'in' just choose anything you are ever likely to need. It's a truly silly way of doing things and much easier and more consistent via USB on the 1D3 series'

I remembered reading once that once you turned them on once, you can always go in and turn them on and off in-camera. So I just set the ones with options, and turned them all on.

The problem I have now is that I will set it up one way and register it as PF Group #1. It work like I want. Then, I will go change and save them as PR Group#2. When I check it, they work like I want in #2. BUT when I switch back to #1, now it is the same as #2. Basically, anytime I change the PF and register them to group 1/2/3 it changes the other two groups the same. So obviously I'm saving them the wrong way or something.
