what have the Romans ever done for us anyway.
Well it's a nice upgrade, but I can't see how people are saying it's a huge upgrade. Huge would have been a brand new AF system, wireless flash and real weather sealing on top of what was announced, which would have meant it matched the D300 for specs.
I'd say 60D will be the camera that gets Canon to D300, but by then D400 will probably raise the bar again.
Nice camera still and I've calculated compared to my 1D II and 5D it's like a 1.72x TC for birders. 15.1MP in a 1.62x crop means a lot of reach. A 500 f/4 + 1.4x TC and 50D would be enough for most situations. Even a crop to 50% pixels leaves almost the same as a 20D/30D would give uncropped....Show more →
Are you such a curmudgeon in real life or is this a anti-Canon internet thing.

Yea but does the 500 have the resolution to handle it? Haven't tried the 500 yet but with my 600 + 1.4x TC, the Rebel XSi pretty much outresolves the lens. I'm not convinced that the 500 + 1.4x TC on a 50D would actually provide any significant benefit. I guess someone will try it and let us know.

Yup, Canon finally started to think like Nikon does, the pro-sumer bodies are not that much different than the the pro bodies. I am convinced now that the 7D (to be announced at Photokina) will be competing directly with the 1Ds MkIII. Better sell the MkIII now before the announcement .
Not unless the 5D2 (or whatever) has the same AF as my 1Ds3. Maybe I am alone in that thinking, but we are getting cameras that can shoot in increasingly darker situations, without improving the AF to match it. When I strap a 1.2 or 1.4 lens on my 40D it doesn't focus nearly as well as my 1Ds3, and I doubt the 50D (and by extension 5D2) would be any better.
Don't forget the 920,000 pixel LCD, this is one of the big things people are missing IMO. Thank you Canon, this is a knock-out camera. This is not the same as the 20D->30D upgrade, this is a pretty substantial upgrade (sensor, LCD, ISO range).
From the sample pics on Flikr, if they are real, Nikon just got ousted with the high ISO quality. That ISO16000 looks cleaner than ISO400 on most canon bodies.

have to agree..wish they would improve AF,it was a joy to use that 16-35 on my eos3 last weekend big viewfinder AF lightning fast compared to the 30d..until I could afford a 1 series
the 50d looks inviting
I'm heavily invested in Canon (glass and time), so always happy when they release new stuff - though the 40D I bought less than a year ago has depreciated more than any Canon digital camera I've owned previously - over any length of time. Guess Nikon waking up is accelerating the development cycle (and depreciation) again?
I am disappointed in the two key missing features that the D300 has - weather sealing and top of the line AF. Other than those two critical features, they did all the little stuff. Not sure that it makes it worth ~$600 more than the 40D.
Hopefully the 5D2 will be more like the D700, instead of a year behind it...
download the above image and try to stretch it out 800% - i haven't seen anything like it before on 1.6 crop it also takes heavy PS beating just like 1ds2 file. It will kill most crop bodies.

No mention of weather sealed in spec info.
The Canon site states: Constructed around a stainless steel chassis reinforced by magnesium alloy, this heavy-duty performer is made to last. Canon has also fortified the seal around the battery and memory card compartments to increase resistance to dust and water
Well now I am going to
1. Eat a little crow since I was a nay sayer? Forget it, there are too many rumors, I had to take a stand
2. Reconsider whether I might actually buy a 50D in a few months. I just got a 1DMkII to complement my 40D. Should I sell one, or figure out a way to have all three
3. Admit I can be more of gear head than I previously admitted to.
4. Get a new computer with a large RAID array since my storage needs will have gone up dramatically & I need the horsepower to process said large images.
