p.1 #1 · 1280's bright colors - new printer to equal it?

I used an epson inkjet 1280 for years and it printed beautiful, bright, rich colors - very crisp. My work is usually not photography, but graphic images that have color areas with no gradation that I print on a (non-epson) bright white matte "art paper." The 1280 finally broke and I replaced it with the R1900 after reading great reviews. I thought I was getting an upgrade from the 1280, but the colors are just not the same - less bright, less saturated, not as crisp. I've tried to correct this dullness by experimenting print settings but nothing gets even close to the 1280. The R1900 does print great photos on photo paper, etc. But for my kind of graphic design work, I'm not satisfied.

Has anyone else noticed this? Does anyone know if there are other epson printers that use the same quality or similar kind of ink as the 1280? What's the difference between hi-gloss ink (R1900) and hi-definition ink (1400)?

I'm considering the 1400, 1800, 2400 & 2800. (or should I just get another 1280?) I'm also looking for speed and cost per page, but the ink quality is the most important to me. thanks!
