p.1 #1 · Few from 200mm micro

I took these over the weekend w/ the Nikon D700 and the 200mm f/4 Micro. The small damselflies are just a little bigger than he size of the sewing machine needle. They were very hard (for me) to shoot. All handheld and mainly cropped and resized for posting. I find some noticeable details are lost after converting from NEF to JPEG. Any constructive criticism are appreciated. Thanks
dan

Dan,

What do you call that last bug? I once drove from New York City to Annapolis, Maryland with one of those on my car roof, all the way.

Tenacious little guy.

Lou,
I didn't know either and was told it is "a female speckled bush cricket (katydid)." by Brian V. here https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/680619/0#6091837.

DANG, that lens is super, love the mantis shots. Wish I could get the one for sale on CL here.

All fantastic Dan, but I'll go with #4 - the critter is staring at your D700... very sweet shot.

Thank you guys. Yep, that mantis (#4) did turned its head around and stared at me as I tried to get closer to it.

Wonderful shades of green! Green is nature and the G is definitely holding up its end of RGB

Hey Dan, did you have a grip on the D700? The 200mm (AF version) balances so well on large bodies that I could used a lot as a short tele lens for other things. I wonder how it balances on a D700 without grip. One of the lenses I wish I still had.

Dan, The Preying Mantis and the Cricket are well done. You could have come a bit more parallel to the Damselfly's body in #1 to utilise the depth of field you had - never mind, its still a picture full of details

Hi Jack,
I have the grip but I left it on my D300 (not with me at the time). My plan is to use the D300 w/ teles for the extra reach so I tend to leave the grip on the D300 more often. It wasn't so bad without the grip but I think the grip would have helped to balance it better, especially handheld shooting.

Thank you Ram. I was floored after seeing your pics. It was difficult to keep these damsels just in focus because they are so small and thin plus the wind. I appreciate the suggestion and noted that for my future shots.
Dan
