I think it does make sense for Canon to announce the 50D now, Rather then wait till Photokina when the announce the 5D2, This way the 50D Won't be overshadowed by the 5D2 once that is announced.

Could be less than 24 hours, but I'm surprised I haven't seen more mention of actual notices of Aug. 26 press conferences.

And with a kit lens I'm sure many will be glad to purchase.

Personally, I'm far from excited.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

It has been Canon's pattern to announce the Photokina cameras in the last week of August for Photokina in September. I think that if a 5D2 and a 50D are to be shown at Photokina, they will be announced together.

In 2004, Canon announced the EOS 20D in August. But they waited until Photokina in September to unveil the 1Ds Mark II.

They'll do the same this year.

Good catch, thanks!

That explains the lack of 5D2 / 5Dn / 3D / 7D leaks.

Right, there is a press conference from Canon Europe in Amstelveen this week, but that one will cover the 50D and compact Powershot/IXUS/G (or how do you call these lifestyle thingies?). BTW, this mkII indication.... anyone noticed before that this was only for 1D series to indicate it's DIGIC generation? 1dmkII was DIGIC II. This was the reason why they called it's succesor 1DIIn and not mk III. That name was reserved for the next generation DIGIC III based 1D serie. So I guess if Canon decided to use a mk X indication on it's 5 series it would be a 5D mk IV isn't it? (NOT!)

Be prepared for the suprise my friends it's gonna be EOSfun time now!

Pffft, that ISO 1600 shot looks like CRAP!

You can CLEARLY see the ISO noise flying from the wheels! 50D must be an utter waste of money, shame on Canon!

May contain traces of sarcasm

Once you get into the diffraction zone then you are resolving as much or less than the lesser megapixel camera so the final image will have no more detail than an uprezzed 40D file! In that case paying more for megapixels you don't use just because it gives you a bigger file size is a false economy. This article by Professor Ruben Osana http://luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/resolution.shtml explains this in depth and goes as far as saying that with the 1Ds mkIII once you hit the diffraction zone you are halving the megapixels with every stop past the diffraction sweet spot. I know
...Show more

There is some truth in what's just said, but it can lead to MORE misunderstandings regarding the effects of diffraction.

It stems from closing the aperture blades at the LENS. When the aperture is made too small, the wave nature of light kicks in and geometrical optics (or the rectilinear picture of light) breaks down.

Having greater pixel density does NOT affect diffraction per se. It only serves to SHOW the effects of diffraction more clearly, the same way that the poor optical quality of certain cheap lenses is made more obvious. You'll rather not see the effects of diffraction? You can either stop pixel peeping or down-size your images. Expert landscape photographers (such as Derek von Briesen) will tell you the effects of diffraction are often OVERblown.

While I still have no confirmation regarding this 50d "rumor", if you look over the past years it is not uncommon for Canon to release information spread over a few days. This includes the xxd series cameras being differentiated from lenses and other items.

Notice there was no pictures of the 50D on the website. I suspect it's a hoax. If it was 12MP, then it would be more believable but 6.5FPS @ 15MP in a prosumer body? Really doubt it.

i'm not sure why you would think that 15mps in a prosumer body is unbeleivable: sony. pentax, and samsung already have 14.2-14.6 mp cropped sensor cameras on the market. in the case of the pentax and samsung models, iso is extendable up to 6400. these cameras were announced before pma 2008, and have been available for a while.
one of the issues with many of the "major brand" users is that so much time is spent worrying about and fueling the canon vs. nikon fires, that the activities of other camera makers is either ignored or seriously discounted.

I just find it funny that one of the major gripes about all the past XXD releases is "it's only a 2MP increase" or "there's NO MP increase (for the 30D)." Now that we get a 50% total resolution increase, people are complaining that there's TOO MUCH resolution.

Look, Canon knows that the DSLRs will only sell if they have strong noise characteristics, especially in the non-Rebel lines. They are not going to bump from 10 to 15 if the increase means the noise handling goes to crap.

Swedish and dutch press conference tomorrow, I'm hoping 5d upgrade, dreading 40d upgrade only. I have a big lot of money burning a hole in my pocket (lot of alternative lenses have soothed me so far, but now i need a full frame sensor :P )

Tomorrow almost feels like Steve Jobs' announcement of Apple products. Normally, I wouldn't care about a Canon announcement too much, because I've been satisfied with my used D60 for years. But, this time, I'm also part of the crazy worldwide audience.
