It's all been incremental. This XXD line is turning out to be the biggest marketing coup IMO. I can't believe people with 40Ds are even thinking of upgrading to 50Ds. And here I am chugging along with my 3 year old XT, buying glass and selling prints instead. Of course I may get a very very good deal on a 40D or 5D very, very soon.....(tomorrow) Thanks Canon (and Nikon).

I sure hope they fixed the af compared to the 30d and 40d. I own the 30d and 40d and both have focus problems especially any type of action. Anyone who thinks these cameras are good for action is fooling themselves. I sure wish I would have just saved my money and bought a 1dm3. oh wait, that one has got issues too!! I thought Canon was the way to go, if the 50 has the same af system as the previous models then I would stay away. Canon better hurry up and figure this problem out or else you're going to see one more photog going to the dark side!

Am I the only one thinking this is the smallest upgrade Canon has put on the marked to date?

Let alone face detection almost seems like a joke.

If you want a bigger upgrade, buy the 1DsIII. Apparently the 50D is not a good enough camera for you, so you should consider something else.

So tonight is the big night! Does Canon typically make announcements exactly at 12am? What time zone?

i laughed at the 30D upgrade, and jumped on the 40D, but i am seriously thinking about the 50D.. the UDMA, better screen and viewfinder....higher res, possible pixel binning, ultra high ISOs...

Let's wait on the UDMA until we see it. My 1Ds3 has UDMA, too, yet the benefit is marginal, compared to the UDMA implementation in the D3 for example. So just because it has the sticker doesn't mean it's really that big a leap.

I think the viewfinder is identical to the 40D viewfinder.

Darn... no 5D2. Just 50D, 18-200 lens and some point-and-shoots. Check DPReview front page for more info.

The news conference is scheduled for 9 am Europe time, which would be Midnight Pacific Time, 3 am Eastern Time, 4:00 pm Tokyo time. The information might be released an hour beforehand.

The print button now appears to have two functions ... print and something else which looks like it might be live view. If it is live view, that would be an improvement over the 40D.

ISO expandable to 12800 is pretty incredible. Just 1 year ago that number was unthinkable... I'd like to see how the file looks after some post-processing with noise-reduction software.

Good news for all the f4 lens owners... their lenses are usable indoors now.

Price and ship date

The Canon EOS 50D is slated to ship in early October 2008 at an expected street price of US$1399 in the U.S. The EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is to ship at about the same time at an expected street price of US$699. The EOS 40D will continue to be sold in the U.S. through at least the end of 2008, says Westfall, at its recently-reduced price of US$1099.

from LINK

Also, 18-200 mm does not have USM ... well that lens is DOA from my perspective.

$1,399 ... ouch ... I'm not impressed.

If you look under the "Features" tab on Canon, it says H1:6400 and H2:12800.

No higher than the 40D intro price of $1,299.

Price increase of $100 over the 40D intro price. Many Canon 40D users are getting squeezed here ... very short product cycle (especially when you consider when RAW support finally materialized), price increase on new model and price reduction on 40D (now $1099) at the same time. Essentially, many of us are looking at a loss of $700, if we are upgrading.

$100 will buy you about a tank full of gas or diesel if you will for some folks .

From the Canon web site ... a description of the new vignetting correction feature:

Camera Adjusts Tricky Details.
New Lens Peripheral Illumination Correction setting to automatically even the brightness across the image.

Canon's exclusive Lens Peripheral Illumination setting takes into account any light falloff in the corners of the frame and corrects it, making for a perfectly exposed image. Correction data are detected automatically on a number of Canon EF lenses and can be entered manually through the included Canon EOS Utility software.

do what I do, I let the beta testers do their job in the first 2-3 months, then once the price goes down a bit, wait a bit more...then wait a bit more. By then ,1 year has passed by and the camera becomes $600 cheaper. Imagine the gas $ saved....
