Maybe a 500/4 guy now but I still admire this lens. Only reason I don't use it more often is because I sunk so much in the 500/4 I still use it when I travel and whenever I get tired of lugging the 500 around. I had planned to have it glued on a 40D but that didn't work out.
It is sharp and has great contrast uniformly throughout all apertures, light weight, really 400mm (as opposed to some zooms < 400mm close-up), fast AF.

Thinking of buying this lens, just need a little push. I’d like to see a variety of shots to confirm its excellent IQ and any personal comments why you think its a good choice.

It is great and light telephoto lens, works superb with or without 1.4tc, however you would need 1D body for this otherwise tc/AF will not work well.
Many many thanks to all who have post comments and or shots. I have taken the plunge and ordered one, just hope I can get near to the quality of the shots posted.

Seriously, if you can live without IS the 400/5.6 is a cracking lens.
That is the sole reason which stopped me from buying it. I chose the 300/4 IS instead as it is (IMHO) a much better general purpose tele. That said, I am not an avid bird photographer. If I were, I probably would have gotten this one instead.
Happy shooting,
Yakim.
