p.2 #1 · Sigma sucks

everyone know there are bad copies of all lenses. usually canon lenses are better than sigma lenses but that is the price you pay. now for your case, no lens should look that bad brand new after being calibrated. so in general sigma does not suck it is more of the "B" squad in the lineup.

THX for all your anwsers.
Its not my intention to provoke Sigma owners, which has good copies.
Only is it hard to accept that i was put off that the lens is good after it was send back to Sigma. So i 'lost' my money.
What i am trying to say is that when you are at the store buying a good lens (you think) its not a casino like you put your money on that lens and lost!!!
unacceptable!

Bad copies always makes people cry, but in the end all you can do is suck it up go back to the merchant and ask for another lens in exchange. If they question have some samples on a flash drive and show them, or just have your body along with you and mount the lens and take some photos.

I am lucky as I live right close to one of the big camera stores here in Alberta and they allow exchanges within the first 14 days if there is an issue with the lens. They are usually nice enough to extend this for me as i can be away working for 21+ days before getting a good outing with a lens.

While I don't fully agree with the title - I would say the Sigma 28-70 f2.8 was a pretty disappointing lens for me. Not the worse lens I have tried - the Canon 18-55 and 28-80 (old EOS kit lens) both win the my worse lens prize.

I was never very happy with my Sigma 28-70, the pictures were ok but just did not pop for me. That said my Sigma 15-30 is a great lens - very sharp. I also have the bigmo and I enjoy that lens quite a bit. But my 28-70... in the end I gave it to a friend when I bought my 24-70 f2.8 L. My friend loves the lens, he only had the kit lens on his XT.

Reason I still buy Sigma - I have had good luck with some lenses - and if you have problems Sigma's come with a 5 year warrenty. I see just as many complaints on forums about many different Canon lenses - and I have had some bad Canon copies.

Too bad for me, the lens is already a few year old....
Never had an L-lens before on my body, only a EF 24mm, the differences wheren't that big then plus i did not make the same pictures to compare..

At this point if you still have the lens send it back to Sigma with sample photos (i would print some and also send some on a cheap flash drive with exif still in tact like CR2s) and have them examine the lens again.

I only own one L and it is my 70-200, the rest are either EF-S or Sigma stuff. And in the end for what I do you can not tell the difference between my L and my Sigma. Also I am not a pixel peeper, although if i did have photos that looked like the sample you posted it would have went back right away, or sent off to be fixed.

well, normally , i only use RAW, sharpen it with adobe RAW4.x or CaptureOnePro,
then mildly sharpen (JPEG or TIFF), then resize to fit a 6 x 4 print, again sharpen

Dark_, thanks for the encouragement, i give Sigma a call when they are back in september, give them a change to fix this.

Not a problem goldvertigo, i know the English language barrier makes misunderstandings (i have a lot of German friends heh). As I said if all you ever are doing is 4x6 - 8x12 you most likely will not notice the difference in a Sigma, Tamron, Tokina, or Canon L.

. It's like you've got my lens. I've a Sigma 24-60mm f/2.8 that's very similar. I sent it in to Sigma, they calibrated, it performs pretty much the same. I had considered taking another stab at sending it to sigma, but decided instead to try to e-bay it (w/ sample photos so as not to hide anything). Good luck w/ whatever course you choose. I'm assuming I'm just unlucky, but I think I'm done with Sigma anyway.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone sent lenses back multiple times? Did you make any progress doing that? I could be swayed to give it another shot if I got some positive feedback (lens is still for sale on e-bay, so I can just cancel it).

ive had friends and myself have bad copies of even L lenses, so i would say its just the nature of the beast, its how the company deals with the customer after is what i care about, both CPS and Sigma have done me well in the past. BTW i have had a 17-55 IS fail on me twice and misfocused more times than any sigma lens i have owned. My friend had to buy 2 24-70L's to get a good one.

As an ex-owner of half a dozen Sigma lenses, (5 of them bad) I fully agree with the OP. Canon is slightly better with maybe 1 chance out of 3 of getting a good copy, even with L lenses. If you can do with manual focusing and manual aperture stop down, I would suggest to go the Zeiss way. Chances of bad copies are nil, and they're better and cheaper than equivalent L lenses (but no zooms except in the older Contax mount).

p.2 #14 · Sigma sucks

Folks, lets keep in mind that every inter net forum about cameras has tons of threads titled "this lens is bad", be it Canon, Nikon, Sigma, or what ever. There are also tons of individual posts about specific lens with pix that show the lens is good, bad, or in between.

I take most of these threads with a grain of salt. No doubt the OP has problems with the IQ of his lens while others have the same lens and get good IQ.

I would have no problem with the OP saying "My Sigma Sucks"; but it is obvious not all Sigma lens are bad. I would have the same problem with someone saying my Canon or Nikon sucks.

The OP might well be better off trying to get ideas about how to solve the problem. I bought a Tamron and had to send it back; the only time I have done so with any lens I bought. Still I don't think all Tamron lens are bad and would buy another one if it fit my shooting style; and the same goes for Canon, Nikon, and any other lens maker.
