p.1 #1 · which setup would you prefer?

if you were someone who just did photography as a hobby, take photos when traveling etc... leaned more toward wide angled style and had a 1.6x crop camera. Which would you rather have?

Tamron 17-50mm/2.8 or
Tamron 28-75mm/2.8 & Sigma 10-20mm?

btw, I'm leaning toward the second.

I'd probably get the first option...the 20-28mm range you're missing in option 2 would drive me nuts if I tended towards wide angle.

(Disclaimer: I have the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, and it's wide enough for me on a 1.6x crop, so I clearly don't shoot wide.)

I had a 10D and 28-75 combo for a while and really enjoyed it. I kept the 28-75 for quite some time. I regret selling it and will most likely pick up another one in the near future.

The first lens is a great walk-around range, at least for my personal shooting style. The second choice, as Adam pointed out, is missing a pretty critical focal range. Nevertheless, just listen to your heart and go for it. If you don't like your choice, it's always possible to sell the lenses and try a new setup. Only you know what works best for you.

I like wide stuff and I own a 10-20 right now, but it isn't very practical to keep this on my camera all the time, so I need another len's to walk around with..

So if you owned the 10-20 and didn't want to give it up, would you go with a 28-75 or a 17-50 as your walk around? I'm just afraid my 10-20 will never see my camera if I go with a 17-50. Which may end up being a good thing??

There isn't a tremendous amount of overlap between the 10-20 and the 17-50. If you find yourself shooting wider than 17mm, you still need the 10-20. And 20-28mm is quite a useful range if you want slightly wide on a crop body...the 17-50 covers that range well.

I love my 28-75, but I'd have trouble recommending it over the 17-50 to anyone who uses the words "wide angle" and "1.6x crop" in the first paragraph of their post

I have the 28-75 and really like it, but if I was to need or want more wide angle then I think I would go with one that was a little wider.

Just saw one of your posts further down in the thread, and if I was you I would go with the 28-75

Second combo, but I'd get the Canon 10-22 or wait for the new Tamron 10-24 f/3.5-4/5 which is to replace the 11-18.

+1 to that. The difference between 10mm and 17mm is ridiculous.

Why not take a look at the Tokina 11-16 and the Tamron 17-50 as a combo? Both lenses are fixed f2.8 and both are exceptionally sharp.

after much deliberating and changing my mind multiple times. I do believe the 17-50 is the way to go. If I had the 28-75. I'd probably be switching over to my 10-20 way to often and it would be a pain in the rear.

I also have a 50mm 1.8 and its super narrow for me. With that said, I think a 17-50 will be the better walk-around with and I will keep the 10-20 in my backpack.

Also, thanks for all the input and also the recommendation on the Tokina 11-16. I would give up 1mm on the wide side for a constant 2.8 any day.

I strongly concur. If you can't afford both, 17-50 alone is in my view still the right choice for a crop camera. The other lens really is sized for a full-frame.
