p.1 #1 · Steam Train In The Rain

Steam Train In The Rain

Yesterday it was raining on and off so I decided to take my flash and try to get a few shots. I like the look of smoke and steam when there is a lite rain.

To me, number one is the best shot. I think it looses something, impact, in the B&W conversion. It goes flat. Three & Four are beautiful. But one is mighty!

Roger, #1 is really a great capture! I really like the way the fill flash worked on the headlight. BP

I like them all, the B&W has a timeless quality and presents the smoke in a more dynamic way, great job, imo

Agree with above, the first one is simply awesome. There is just enough color in it to "POP" it on the screen and lock your eyes into it. Great Job.

Darn! These really make we want to go back up to the Chama area for a couple weeks.

Thanks for posting them.

487, blowing the mud rng at Lobato, has my vote. I find that "Mighty" is a good title for #1. Just goes to show, Rain or shine , is fine.

My favorite is #4, but it needs more saturation and contrast. It would be great if it were punched up!

I agree with Panda that the B&W loses something, which is surprising.

Have you tried other types of B&W conversion?

I don't know much about post software yet, but I've been using DxO's Film Pack recently, and it has a lot of variations for B&W. Also selenium and a few Sepias, of course. You might want to try the demo.

I ran your first pic through Film Pack, and made a bunch variations with toners, positive & negative film, and various grains. A few of them are wonderful, even from the source posted-jpeg. I have about 15 meg of small tifs you can look at. Send me your email address and I'll send them to you.

Rogelio! Great set, buddy. #1 just like it is, Sir. I opened the thread and said "Oh Boy"
he's at it again. Ya really captured the feel and scale of the moment.

I agree, obviously! Having the conductor in the shot makes it extra special.

#1 and Kodachrome. Still wondering how I can get my wife to believe a trip to Colorado and steam trains equal a cruise for our 25th anniversary.

That looks like some really narrow guage track, or is it a trick of perspective?
