So, a "good" friend called you today from the Canon dealer meeting, and he felt more compelled to talk to you about future P&S cameras instead of new SLRs?
You guys are all getting so serious, the OP only said anything about the kit lens, nothing else. Even then I have little doubt that he was doing it just to wind you guys up for a laugh and he has achieved that soooooo easily!
IMHO face detection works surprisingly well in Canon's P&S models.
If a small ELPH P&S with DIGIC III processor can handle the routine, I don't see why such a thing would be completely superfluous on a DSLR. You don't have to use it, but like so many features it can be handy.
I'm not waiting for the 50D, more interested in FF developments, but although there are many features that are more important to add or improve, I'd see this as an additional advantage (as a separate setting).
Well, it'll of course only be available with LiveView enabled. We're making DSLRs into P&S, and I don't like the trend. Not because I don't think that there are some good features to be passed between them, but I fear that soon the low end DSLRs will no longer be SLRs, and will simply kill the mirror altogether and make LCD only EF mount cameras. Ugh.
I don't know anything about what the OP says is coming. I do know that the owner of National Camera in Minneapolis was invited to, and is attending this Canon dealer meeting in Hawaii'
This would be a bit surprising as it seems that an 18-200 type lens would be more likely to be in a kit with a Rebel series camera, and not a 10 series camera.
That, and the 40D really isnt all that old? HD LCD is nice, but face detection on this level of camera seems a bit like a joke.

Not really surprising as the current 40D kit options are the 28-135 3.5-5.6/17-85 4-5.6 and the Rebel kits include the 18-55. Moreover, the D300 is paired with either the 18-200 or the 18-135 in its kits.
An 18-200 3.5-5.6 IS or 18-135 3.5-5.6 IS would at least supplant the 28-135 offering.

I think the "leak" might have been slightly confused and mixed up the specs with those of the new PowerShot G10...
I guess it all depends if this rumoured 50D is full frame or not. A 1.6x fov crop 15mp sensor is going to be well beyond the optical resolution of most L lenses. 15mp Full frame will be far less demanding of the the optical sharpness of a lens.
I wonder if that's what Canon intend to do to head off Nikon's D3/D700 threat? Push out a new full frame 5DII and a new full frame 50D?
These are interesting times!
Well, I don't think 15MP is that much larger pixel wise than the 12MP XSi. Since it's an area the actual pixel dimensions aren't increasing quite as fast as the MP implies, especially once you get to the higher MP counts. The noise is quite nicely controlled on the Xsi, so maybe they would be able to pull it off.
