I can understand the RH side, due to the angle the pic was taken and the rust on the fence, but the left side has me puzzled.....

I'd say it was a stray hair or piece of fuzz... something... I have that same problem sometimes, though it doesn't show up quite as "wide". Maybe something that got on the lens when you changed it ?

If you let your vision go out of focus it appears to be a diamond shape, almost like you shot it through a chain link fence.

I have an aviary with smaller wire, same pattern and every once in a while, depending on sun position/time of day, I have seen this sort of aberration. Had you shot 2 more shots of exactly the same thing the light might have changed and the shadow would likely disappear?

I'm glad to hear it has an optical origin! I was starting to worry, this place is supposed to be haunted.............

I agree with hollypop. When I look closely at the pixels, the chain links seem to be the same width whether they are within or outside the smudge. This suggests to me the image behind the smudge isn't out of focus. I strongly suspect that part of the image is clouded by some sort of lint on or near the lens.

and here is the image right before and right after that one. this rules out the chance of something being on the lens or sensor i think....

Here's a small section that shows the links not smudged and a second that shows linked from the smudged zone. Notice the link pixels are about the same width. If the smudged area was out of focus I'd expect the width of links to be significantly larger that the width of the links in the not smudged area.

I would have to agree with Hollypop and Auntipode. I looks like lint or some such. Were you wearing a ball cap? Have long hair? Do you believe in UFO's, if not it could just be a weather balloon...

finally an answer that makes sense!
the image was taken at the old State Pen in Moundsville WV. The area behind the fence was turned into a recreational yard after the old death house was torn down. kinda makes ya think, huh?
