p.1 #1 · Going on a cruise, do I bring the 1D??

I'm going on a cruise with my girlfriend in mid-October through the eastern Carribean, and right now I just have the 1DMk3 and a few lenses. Should I risk bringing them or try to get a xxD body by then? (I need to buy a backup anyway) The 1D takes amazing pictures but it's a pricey camera to haul around the tropics on a boat for a week.

I would look at a 40D, I rarely ever take my 1Ds away on holiday, just too cumbersome.

Take it, or what did you buy it for? Having a backup is a great idea, get a used 5D and you won't feel bad if the 1-series never leaves the cabin. I do understand weight and bulk issues.....
You are aware that you >usually<don't get access to sunrise and sunset offshore when on a cruise....

Edited for the nit-pickers.

I went on an east carribean cruise in Feb of this year, and I brought my 30d with a grip. It did not feel cumbersome at all.
Some shore excursions ARE overnight, btw, so you may have opportunity for an onshore sunset. Contrary to a previous comment.
edit >Not really a nit pic, but if someone told me I would not have "onshore" golden light, it would likely bring less camera, on that advice. Merely making sure the whole picture was made available... pardon the pun.< end edit

-edited for perception of 'nit picking'.

I have traveled to most every island in the carribbean and virgin islands and down as far as isla margarita, off of venezuela many times and always on cruises and the only place i have ever been concerned for my high end camera being eyed for theft or robbery was in san juan, puerto rico, twice on 2 different trips there. I probably won't go back there again but if i do, i'll carry my trusty old 20d. Most of the time you think they are watching your camera but in reality they just see an expensive camera and figure you've got some money and try to sell you some dope or a piece of fake jewelry. Just use the safe in you'r room on the cruise ship and you've got very little to worrry about, people in the islands are really nice.

I went on a cruise not long ago and i took most of my gear with me. What i did was that i have the 17-40 on the camera most of the time. I'll take what you have if i were you, don't worry too much about water or banging your gear against something. you are there to enjoy the trip and to take great pictures.

Going to Alaska in Sept. so I am taking the kitchen sink of glass and bodies. Ranging from 18 (maybe 10) to 400 on a crop bodies. When in the tropic islands, I cut down to 3 lenses and 1 body in a med bag. Bottome line, shot like there is no tomorrow, but remember the girlfriend is pretty important as well. HA!

If you have it, take it.

If you don't take it there WILL be shots that will leave you thinking, "I wish I had my 1D with me........".

I went on a cruise a few years ago and took EVERYTHING. Didn't use everything, but I have no regrets either.......
