Thank you so much seetharam!

Very nice Tim. Great to hear about the kayak, with two of you one can keep it straight while the other shoots. My wife and I love our kayaks but she is glad she's in her own. She does video and doesn't need me clicking on her sound. The female wood duck is so filled with details and great light. My fav.

Rob

Rob, you assume a lot about my wife's paddling abilities! Just joking, it does work out well for us, I click and she looks with the binoc's. Thanks for the kind words.

jakita33 wrote:
Great job Tim!!! Hope all went well on the maiden voyage and you kept the gear nice and dry. These are great first shots given you hadn't shot from a kayak before and the conditions seem a bit harsh. Soon it will all be second nature. Can't wait to see more.

J

Thanks for the kind words J and thanks a ton for the bag recommendation, it works perfectly and their customer service is astounding.

I seem to do most of my bird shots from my kayak - most of the time you can get pretty close, except for the d&@n kingfishers, (I haven't gotten as close to one as I'd like yet). For those of you using kayaks , or considering it, I'd suggest a pelican case or several
dry bags

Keep up your kayak posts Tim, between you and Jason (jakita33) you'll push me into finishing my stitch-and-glue mahogany kayak that I've been a-building since...well, for awhile now. You can really get perspectives that you can't from the shore. The Wood Ducklings are great, especially #2, nice look and reflection of the Pied-Billed -- and I don't think ANYone can have Greenies that look like Dave's, so we just better settle for what we have...

Best Wishes,
Steve

Hey Steve get to work on that project, you'll never turn back!! I had a blast out there, I'm sure you will to. Thanks for the kind words.

I recently had the opportunity photograph from a kayak and it was fun. Looks like you manage to get fairly close to the subjects. Great set especially # 3 and 4.

Harsha

Thanks Harsha, I was able to get close to some but others are still wary.

Tim, after seeing how close you can get I think we should set up a 'fleet' purchase on kayaks, I have been dragging my feet getting mine, but this sure is another great reason to go for it!

Pics look excellent in that light, you got all you could and they are very crisp. Wait til you see that Greenie in the good light, that is a good looking bird you have lined up my friend I can hear that pie-billed saying 'is that you Tim'?

Great outing and I really hope your wife enjoyed it too, any shots from her?? Come on Mrs Tim, your turn

Karl............Good for you buddy!

Thanks Karl, go for the fleet purchase, set it up and we can all meet on the water! I'm dying to get that greenie in the morning light!

Shasoc wrote:
Very good job, Tim. The harsh light doesn't seem to have done much damage to your images. The level of details is excellent, so are the colors. I immagine that was a lot of fun. I particularly like #1 and 6.
Socrate

Thanks Socrate, it was indeed fun, once I got over the idea of having the camera that close the the water!

Lil Judd wrote:
Wonderful set Tim

I started to pick top picks, only to realize I didn't know what not to choose.

Congrats on the Greenie. I got my first one yesterday.

Keep Kayaking - - seems a good way to get great shots.

Lil

Glad you liked them Lil, as always thanks for your thoughts. Can't wait to see your greenie!

Ive been thinking about a canoe or a kayak but was concerned about stability and dumping my gear in the water. Was it fairly stable?

Thanks Greg, yes it is pretty stable, as long as you don't do anything stupid!

Thang wrote:
Nice shots Tim. Can't get any better than shooting from a kayak! This sure will give you plenty of opportunity for more great shots.

Thank you Thang, I can't wait to do it again! You have to try it.

Pretty sweet set for a maiden voyage, Tim!! Love shootin' from a 'yak. Very stable and it's
so cool being down on their level, eh?! Don't forget something wide for new landscape
perspectives coming onto shore.

Why thank you TM! It was more stable and easier to shoot from than I thought. Your right about the wide angle.

Martin Good wrote:
Congratulations Tim to you and your wife on your maiden voyage. Lovely detail especially on the third one. The green heron is very nice indeed. Shooting from a kayak must be quite an experience and fantastic to be able to get so close.

Thank you Martin for the congrats and the props. It is a wonderful experience.

I've been tempted many times to rent a kayak boat thingie to shoot out at the bay but just haven't gotten over the risk factor of dropping the gear into the drink. You are a braver man than I

Adds an excellent perspective on the birds from that angle - much like what I get crawling through the mud on my belly at the local ponds - only cleaner Good stuff, Tim!

Ken

Well Ken, now that you have a big gun go ahead and bring that lousy old 400 out on the water!! I used a dry bag sort of deal and once I got the procedure down my confidence went up for keeping the camera safe. That said I'm still a tad leary about it. Thanks.

Thanks Maggie! Yes this was in and around the Arboretum in the middle of the afternoon on a Sunday Not exactly getting away from it all. Oh yes I have dry bags, jakita turned me on to a great duffle that can be submerged!

Ron, I think I will be doing a LOT of bird photog from the kayak. I did see a kingfisher but he only sat on a branch for a minute, no chance for a good shot! Great link by the way, I have the Ocoee Small Waterproof Duffel - down the page on the right side, reccomended by jakita, great bag!

I've told this story before, but I drowned my 20D with my Sigma 80-400 attached last year - fortunately, I had insurance. If I had used my dry bag, it wouldn't have happened. So now my gear is stowed when I get in or out of the 'yak, or in rough conditions, or any type of rapids.
If you are in the right area at the right time, you can also get close to 4 legged critters. My main problem comes when I try a bif shot - movement is limited when sitting in a 'yak.
Happy paddling,
Ron

Thanks Ron, I'll be sure not to show this comment to my wife! I do keep the bags closed when getting in or out and folded over when not using the cam. Words to live by. Thanks for the advice!!
