You need to finish their processing. After you down sample them (I would use bicubic smoother ... I know PS recommends BC sharper, but try the other option), then you need to at least sharpen the image for the web (this will be pretty heavy sharpening). If you feel that you are loosing contrast, you may apply a curves adjustment layer also. What are the specific problems you are seeing in your images?

Thank you for your reply Bill, what I notice most is loss of detail in things like compound eye shots,I will re-sharpen as you suggest and look at the difference

Deke McClelland has a CS3 Sharpening class over on lynda.com. It is oriented toward advanced Photoshop users, but covers this topic in detail. There are many ways to sharpen an image, but you might experiment with doing your sharpening on it's own layer and then use layer opacity to evaluate right level.

Another way to go is to try Photokit Sharpener (I think they have a demo), the plugin has canned sharpening presets for all popular web sizes. This will give you an idea of how much sharpening is really required (it's pretty heavy).

You're putting the cart before the horse. You say you're shooting in RAW, and you need to convert to jpg at the size and resolution you want for the end result, THEN convert to JPG and you'll have what you want.

Or, convert to a TIF (8000 ppi resolution, trust me), then do you cropping and processing, resize from 8000 dpi tp 72 dpi and the physical size you want, THEN save to jpg. Never save or convert to JPG and then try to resize. As you have found, you'll drive yourself crazy.
