So my D700 and 28-300 VC came in today, but I think I got a defective lens. While handling the lens, I can hear something lose inside and while taking pictures pictures the VC is extremely loud. I am not sure if this is how the VC works with Tamrons.
For all those who have this lens, how loud is the VC? And does the lens rattle like something is lose inside? This is my first Tamron so I am a little disappointed.....
I haven't really shaken mine to see if there is a rattle but the VC is a little louder to engage then the VR of the Nikon but in my opinion, works much better and clearly locks in when it locks in. I have been getting handhelds a 1/5. Only you can decide whether yours is faulty but if you are uncomfortable, send it back. I love mine.
I dont have problem if the VC is louder, but mine makes a loud buzzing sound which I dont think is normal. I also hear a clunking sound when I shake it.
Do you have a local camera store? Go and try their model and compare clunking noises. Remember, noise cannot ever be expressed over the internet so there are degrees of acceptability that differ in everyone here. Some people could be deaf and a jet engine would be quiet, but some can hear the slightest buzz. The only way to truly compare is to compare with yourself, because thats the person you're trying to please.

Thanks. I will try to find a place that has one, but there are not many Camera shops close by to where I am. I know noise can be subjective, but I can hear the VC buzz from my lens across the room.
