p.1 #1 · Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 on FF

I know that Ken Rockwell (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tokina/11-16mm.htm) tried this lens of FF camera but I am wondering if anyone here had any experience using this lens at 16 mm and FF.

Thank you,

Michael

Just out of curiosity, why would you be even concerned about that, rather than the whole range?

The Tokina 11-16 has a reduced image circle just for crop cameras. I have this lens too and have been curious myself as to the IQ at 16mm on a FF. At about 14mm the image circle seems to cover the FF so at 16mm it is hoped that the lens gives descent IQ on a FF. This lens is SO sharp on my crop camera that I too am hoping for a descent 16mm performance on FF since I hope to aquire a 5D soon and having the Tokina perform at 16mm would be an added value.

It is because this lens can be only really used on FF at 16 mm. I am trying to see how good it may be when used this way. I would buy it with less hesitation (it is supposedly a very good lens on a crop camera) if it can be of any use on FF as well.

Wow, the KR review looks impressive.

Have you seen this review:

http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/379-tokina_1116_28_canon

I realize that their tests have many detractors but my own tests were quite often compatible with their findings.

I wonder what range is available on the 1.3x crop cameras like the 1D MK3?

11mm x 1.3x = 14.3mm on the 1.3x crop cams.

11mm x 1.6x = 17.6mm on full frame, which tells me it probably still vignettes pretty noticeably at 16mm on a 5d

The Tokina 12-24 f/4 works at 15.6mm on a 1.3x crop, and at 19.2mm on a full frame.

How about on a 1.3 crop camera? Do you think the image circle would cover the sensor even at the lower end range?

Edit: Waaaay too late. That's what I get for opening up dozens of tabs at once...

Dave Jr:
The Tokina 12-24 f/4 works at 15.6mm on a 1.3x crop,

If not on FF, it may at least work on 1.3 (1.28) crop then

It could be then a zoom (restricted range though) on 1.6 crop and a wide prime on 1.3 crop. I intend to use it as a prime on my 40D as well.

On a 1.3 crop, it (the 11-16mm) should work fine from 14-16mm.

Shocking how much sharper it is than Nikon's 12-24...

as far as i recall the tokina lenses are design to cover the 1.5x sensors, so in this one the image circle should actually bigger and cover the FF sensor earlier than 17.6mm.

Does any 5D owner also have this lens? I read the ken rockwell article but would be curious to hear from a 5D user to see if they've ever tried the Tokina 11-16 on their FF body. I'm a proud owner of a 20D with plans to upgrade (hopefully) to a 5D MkII soon. Would love to have a fast UWA lens for my 20D as well as a solid 15 - 16mm lens for my upcoming FF excursion.

Give me a couple of hours and I'll post an 11-16 shot from a 1Ds at 16mm. I tried the Tokina 12-24 on the 1Ds and 1DmkIIn and did not like the results at all. Too much vingetting for my likes from both cameras. I have wide Canon lenses for these cameras so it was not a big deal or deal maker that the lens did not work on these cameras.

Here it is, 1Ds with the Tokina 11-16 at 16 mm straight out of the camera, via LR. At 15 mm the vignetting is quite obvious in the VF. On the 1.3 crop, 15 mm may be ok.

Thank you very much, Gil. I think that if we crop to 5:4 ratio, it would be almost OK

I've shot my 12-24 on film at 18mm with no vignetting.
