p.1 #1 · Help! Need a bag for storing/transporting my gear!

Do you have 1 big bag or case that you store your gear in while at home that you can also use to transport your gear in? I don't! I have the following gear and can stuff it into my Nature Trekker but I'm not sure that's what I want to do. I'm looking for a more organized solution. Probably the most annoying thing about packing my gear (listed below) is the last piece I tried to pack last night when packing for a weekend away was the 17-40 and that f'ing hood is gigantic!

5D
1D
17-40
35L
85L
70-200 f4 IS
100-400 IS
chargers (5D and travel 1D charger)
extra batteries
1.4x tc
extension tubes
knife

I also have a 500 f4 IS that lives in my Glass Taxi. I think a bag that would hold everything including the 500 would just be too big

Also, what small shoulder bag/backpack would you recommend for say the 5D with the 70-200 f4 IS and one of (35L, 17-40 or Tamron 28-75)? This would be for a day walking in the city or just heading out with the family.

I've spent hours looking at all the bags at Cambags.com. There are some nice looking bags out there but I'm still not sold on any one bag. Right now I have the following bags:

Crumpler 4 million dollar home
Crumpler 7 million dollar home
Tamrac Velocity 9x
Lowepro Pro Mag AW2
Lowepro Flipside 300 (can't seem to fit anything in this foolish bag!)
Lowepro Nature Trekker

Just a note, I am a complete and utter retard when it comes to configuring using the velcro dividers. Not sure why, I have a good job, went to a good school, can build/fix things, I just suck at arranging those dividers!

BeeMan458 where are you

Thanks,

Dennis

If you want a VERY big bag - I recently bought a Mountainsmith Reflex II XXL bag for use with my 400 2.8 lens. It's huge, but stores a lot of gear and is OK for a short walk from car to location. Also has rubberized bottom so you can set it down in rain/snow without worries.

I have some cheesy cellphone pictures of it here:

The small lens in the picture is the 16-35 2.8L II with the hood, which is even bigger than the 17-40 hood

This will fit everything you listed except for the 500.

ThinkTank Airport Intl, $329

It's small too.

You have to define "transport" or you will get a bunch of solutions to an unknown problem.

Thanks mt-m and Maurice.

MSC, by "transport" I mean getting all my stuff from my house to either my in-law's Summer house or my cousin's Summer house. From there I'd take what I needed for the day's activities.

I just want to get my camera gear from point A to B (not flying, just something that'll fit in my trunk (Audi A4) along with 2 or 3 big overnight duffel bags.

I have a Think Tank Airport Security 2.0 I use for weddings or when I need to haul all my gear from place to place.

I have a pelican 1510 when I need maximum protection.

I have a Crumpler 7 million shoulder bag for out and about.

For trips I pack my gear in either the pelican or Airport Security then use the Crumpler at my destination.

If you are simply looking at storage and hauling - not needing to work out of it - then look for something from Pelican. Uber strong and safe.

Agreed, a Pelican is best for what you describe. You can get them with wheels too if that matters.

I don't know if this is something that fits your plans/needs at all, but we built a closet out for photo/studio supplies and as part of it we built a drawer that was designed to be the same size as a pelican case divider insert set. So, when at home, every camera/lens has its own slot in the padded/divided drawer. If we need to take everything on the road, we can pull the entire insert out of the drawer and drop it in a pelican case.

Works well for us (where having two photogs in the family leads to lots of "where's the 16-35!??!" etc. -- now everything has its own standard place and isn't spread across several bags in different offices or whatever).

Equipment cabinets for storage. Various hard cases, backpacks, shoulder bags, rolling cases, dollies, carts, etc. for carrying to the job site.
