p.2 #5 · Ask Zeiss for ZE EOS focus confirm lenses
In reference to which is more preferred, AF confirmation or auto aperture - It all depends on the focal length, I would say. I prefer getting AF confirmation on longer focal length than auto aperture and the other way around for WA.

What I'd like is a Zeiss lens that transmits EXIF data. Can you get that now with a ZF and chip? I read somewhere that the confirm chips often do this, which to me would be more important than (the somewhat useless) AF confirm itself.
Besides just having the info for the sake of having it, if we had (have?) complete data, DxO could conceivably make correction modules for select Nikon lenses on EOS bodies. That would be wonderful.
I asked them once about the possibility of a module for the Nikon 14-24mm on a 5D, and they said it was technically impossible as all needed data would not be transmitted, even with the 16:9 adapter. Could be BS, I dunno. Can anyone comment on this issue?

I got an answer from Zeiss today:
Thanks for your request and your interest in our products.
We are planning to spread our our current product range of SLR lenses (e.g. additional focal lengths) as well as we plan to offer additional camera mounts.
Please understand that we cannot give out further details about future products outside official press releases.

Here is a very polite response from Zeiss:
"Dear Mr. Kennedy,
Thanks for your request and your interest in our products. We always appreciate the comments from our customers about product improvements and future products.
Without a co-operation with the licence owner, we are not able to release lenses that interact electronically with an EF-mount camera body.
But we will keep on working on new products and solutions in future."

Dear Mr. Warming,
Thank you for your mail and interest in our products.

It is good of them to reply to us all. Here's mine:
Thanks for your request and your interest in our products.
At the moment, we cannot offer lenses that fit directly to Canon EF mount cameras (EOS models). The only way to use our current SLR lenses (ZF or ZS series) with EOS cameras is by means of an adapter. Adapters from several 3rd party manufacturers, some including the AF confirm chip, are available on the market.
We will spread out our current product line of SLR lenses, as well as we think about offering them for additional camera mounts.
Please understand that we cannot give out details about future products outside official press releases.

I think the auto aperture is essential, pretty much, unless you can work wide open, or very close to it. I had a great range of Zeiss and Leica glass at one point on a 1Ds and 5D, but as soon as the ZFs came along, I have to confess I jumped ship for Nikon, and that was before FX.
Now that Nikon has an excellent full frame sensor in a reasonably priced body (D700), not to mention the truly great 14–24/2.8, I really cannot see any practical reason to stay with Canon FF bodies. I know that many of the exotics simply will not fit the Nikon, but the lenses that can include some of the best, IMHO. And, on the D300, the 14–24 becomes 21–36, and that's a really handy range too.
If you need to work fast, I would think you need auto stop down before auto focus, frankly. I made my living shooting dance and theatre (available light) with Nikons 30 years ago—and nary an AF lens to be seen. They all had auto stop down, though. Same for sports—you can follow focus with an MF lens, but you simply cannot focus at ƒ8. YMMV, of course; this is just my view. cheers to all, KL

i think the ONLY reason to stick to Canon for now is the following lenses:
24/1.4L
35/1.4L
i guess you could call the 50L's reasons?
And many people feel the 85L's are unequaled...
And of course, the stabilised supetele L's.... They're much better priced than the Nikkor versions.
Other than that, i see no reason to shoot Canon anymore.
