People are convinced, yours truly included, that Canon will announce the replacement of the 5D at the Photokina in September. Nobody knows for sure how it will stack up with the now available D700. Whether Canon saw the D700 coming and made some adjustment, given the time constrants) to the 5D MarkII or they didn't and will move forward with its introduction of luke warm upgrades, is everybody's guess. In the case of the later, the only adjustment that they can do is the price.... . Typically, a week or two before the opening, companies will make the announcment/introduction of their new product. So, if we wait another month or 5 weeks or so, we will find out.
Ulrik, your budget will be more than sufficient to buy a 5D MkII or the D700 . That's a good thing.
It wouldn`t surprise me if Canon had to rethink the 5D replacement to be able to keep the lead(stay in the running)
It must be really difficult to design and bring a camera to market at the right price with the right spec at the right time. Wonder what the lead in time is from blank sheet to launch??
I think too that the photokina is the most likely place/time for revealing the new 5d, so I'll keep my fingers crossed the next month along with many of you guys I guess :P
Would you guys be satisfied if the 5D2 has the exact same specs as the 1Ds3 but 16MP? Seems like people are expecting the 5D2 to trump the 1Ds3 but cost $2,000. Expectations for the 5D2 are too high and impossible to fulfill. I mean, are you guys okay with the camera only going up to ISO3200?
Agreed. This is what it's come to now. If we don't get a miracle with every new camera, it's a POS. People want a top of the line body at an entry level price. Expectations ARE so high for the 5D replacement that no matter what it does it won't be good enough for all the forum rats. There will always be things that Nikon does better ( different ) and there will always be things that Canon does better ( different ). Maybe we should wait for the Nicanon or the Canikon, which will be the perfect blending of all things that are good in small format photography. But then, what will there be to bitch about ?

It's long past time for adjustments in the markets AND expectations. Canon has "had their way" with the public for years and is charging $8k for what exactly? A sensor in a sub $4k body.....
I definitely agree with you. Canon is trapped between having to match with what Nikon is offering and at the same time make a camera that will still make 1Ds3's cost make sense. In the past the 1Ds cameras were compared against medium format cameras, and in that respect the 1Ds is a real bargain. However, now that Nikon has come out with the D700 (and in the process sacrificed its own D3), it's putting Canon at a tough position. Either Canon comes out with a 5D2 that exceeds 1Ds3 at a fraction of the cost and sacrifice the 1Ds3 like how Nikon sacrificed the D3, or get blamed for a sub-par 5D2 that falls below expectations.
I doubt Canon will come out with a 5D2 that exceeds 1Ds3 in all specs except MP. More likely Canon will put out a 40D with full-frame sensor and make it cheaper than the D700. Maybe with a price of around $2000-$2500. What Canon is betting on is its users will be satisfied enough to not go through the trouble of switching. And it's the right bet, I know I will not switch to Nikon no matter how good/bad the new 5D is because I'm satisfied with what Canon currently offers. Sure, I'll be disappointed if 5D falls short of expectations, but it's not going to make me a Nikonian.
And yes, I'm very curious as to how much profit Canon makes on its cameras. I know that even the Rebels have a much higher margin than point-and-shoots, so for the higher end Canons the profit must be pretty amazing... it wouldn't surprise me if Canon can make a profit selling the 1Ds3 for $1,500.
At the end of the day, so far I've been happy with the thousands of dolalrs that I've contributed to Canon, even though I know they overcharged me by a lot. Pictures (especially high quality ones ) are priceless!
I believe nikt's original post makes sense in another way. So far, Canon's and Nikon's offerings are not positioned directly against each other, but rather in a staggered way. The 40D is "less" than the D300, itself "less" than the 5D, itself "less" than the D3, itself "less" than the 1DsIII...
Thus, it stands to reason that, if the Nikon D700 is pegged squarely at the space the 5D is occupying now (entry-level professional FF), it portends that the 5DII won't be there. With the present low prices on 5D, it means more, not less performance and price for 5DII Vs 5D as well as D700.
So I think nikt's forecast could be right on the money.

"But this time, it's been Canon to breathe a HUGE sigh of relief when the specs of the D700 were released."
Assuming that Canon did breathe a sigh of relief when the D700 was released (which is a pretty big assumption that I have no way of knowing whether it is true), I think the question is why did they breathe a sigh of relief?
It may be because the replacement for the 5D will have better specs and or price than the D700, but it might simply be relief that Nikon didn't announce a camera that bettered Canon's two latest offerings. When Canon announced the 1DMKIII it looked like a nice upgrade to me, then there were AF problems and then Nikon announced the D3 which had a number of better specs. What looked like a nice upgrade quickly came to look like a dud. In the meantime, Canon announced the 40D. Again to me it looked like a nice upgrade. A new brighter viewfinder, more cross type AF points, higher resolution sensor, a bunch of other bells and whistles. It looked like the biggest upgrade ever to the XXD lineup, but then Nikon announced the D300 which had better specs in almost all categories except price. Again what looked like a very promising upgrade lost all or almost all its luster. This trumping by Nikon could not have been much fun for Canon execs. Perhaps the relief they experienced if any is that Nikon was not announcing a D90 to totally trump what looks like a nice upgrade in the XSi. Nikon has not even yet announced the highly rumored D3X, which might have trumped what looks like a very good 1DsMKIII. Of course Nikon might well release these cameras shortly and even at or before Photokina, but for now their absence might spell relief for Canon execs and they just may be hoping that Nikon is spending its time addressing the potential 5D, and instead of going after the more lucrative low end or the more prestigious high end.

I don't really care how long you have been here or how many posts you OR I have, none of that is very relevant when you come in this thread looking for trouble and just posting crap. You may be a guy that contributes in other areas of the forum, but in this thread you have not, ok? Trying to state that "my posts are valid beacause my post count is high" or "my posts are valid beacuse your post count is low" is not only logical fallacies, but quite childish.
