Just curious, do you have any figures to back up that claim? I mean, the D700 is only out for less than a month. How can anyone accurately quantify how many Canon shooters are jumping ship? Sure, some will move over. How substantial that "exodus" will be is still up in the air.
As to your second point: Think snowball in hell. Canon is extremely unlikely to bring the 5D successor up to par, resolution-wise, with the 1Ds3. Canon isn't (and shouldn't be) looking for decisive victories, it just needs to be slightly ahead. A resolution hike from 12 to 21 Mpixel is overkill to beat a 12 Mpixel competitor, it will only serve to do some proverbial foot-shooting.
But okay, lets assume for a moment that Canon brings out a non-weathersealed grip-less FF 21 Mpixel camera. Will that be called the successor to the 5D? No chance because it will have left the 5D price-bracket.

Of course not! First the D700 is hardly out, and people that are thinking switching system will first wait to see what the 5D2 will be. Also the cost of switching system is so high for people invested in glass that I do not think that lots of folks will go over the N camp as you suggest. Having a strong Pro line like Nikon has now however will probably lead many people to choose Nikon entry levels cameras when they start investing in DSLR, and this is important for future sales of higher level bodies.

Canon may choose to raise the price, in order to extort more money for higher resolution. Purely a marketing decision. But sensor cost is related to sensor area, not number of pixels. There is no increased cost to Canon for dividing a given sensor into 12.8, 16 or 21.1 MP.

Hey, I implied sales price, not manufacturing costs. Of course it's a marketing decision! But you can't expect any manufacturer to do hefty price gouging on its own products. Not unless it absolutely needs to do so in a desperate attempt to gain market share. Sony might pull off such a stunt, as an investment into market share. Canon and Nikon won't because it would not be in their best economic/business interest. It only results in short-term gain, which may be worth it if you have some serious catching up to do. But once the next generation of product is due, you have to beat your own specs hike. So it's a bad tactical move to make in the long term.
No matter how much we'd like it, Canon is not going to do a US$2000 20+ Mpixel FF camera. Not now. Wait at least a few years and at least one model generation.

OR that could be translated to read:
"On DPreview a lot of gearheads post that they are upset because their 5D doesn't take the kind of pics they imagine a D700 does. 'canon is teh suxxor, nikon is 4 da TRU fotos!'
If canon doesn't make a 1ds3 clone for less than 3k or I won't feel like my forum's gearheads are able to brag as much as the nikon forum's gearheads."
Well anyways, that my best shot as interpreting 'are you high or what' into relative english.
The Nikon D3/D700 are awesome cameras and have features and performance I hope Canon can meet or beat with future cameras. What makes me not consider switching to Nikon is the unpleasant skin tones (plus fast primes) from the Nikon sensors.
Besides in the next 12 months you will see a different strategy from Canon which will benefit those who didn't switch.
People are entitled to their opinion on whether a camera works for them or not. There are some corrections though, can't skew it too much now, can we.
but on all my latest canon cameras, right at the top of My Menu is FORMAT. I tried adding that to the D700 menu and it specifically says it will not allow FORMAT to be added to your custom menu. WTF I use this all the time, so it's great to have quick access to it. whatever...
Why would anyone want to go into a menu to select the format option if it's presented with a simultaneous two button operation on the body.... by pressing the "Delete" and 'Mode' button on the body (which are both marked with 'Format' in a small red font).?
-Chimping... although the LCD rocks and full images look fantastic on the screen, the reality is it looks like crap when really zoomed in. I'm suspecting the limitation is that it's viewing just a low res thumbnail much like canon's system, so even with high res screen it still looks like garbage zoomed in a lot.
'Looks like crap' because the Nikon zooms into a maximum 200% (for whatever reason). Setting one of the functions will allow the centre control dial to zoom in directly to 100% in one press. Very useful.
. Well, a guy is already selling his D700 already here. He didn't seem too impressed compared to his 1D MKIII's. He speaks volumes when he mentions all the "hype" abound.
That's not comparing apples with apples. He should be comparing the 1DMKIII to the Nikon D3 instead. Features and technology wise D700 is a step ahead of the 5D. The D700 will soon be outdated.
Looking into the future, one would say: "Ahhh, a 13MP FF DSLR is a thing of the past."

What is it that you think the 1D3 & D3 have that the D700 does not have, and without which the D700 will become outdated much sooner?

Guy, in the framework of forum expert photographers, use-disuse of a particular camera model hardly matters sometimes.
For example, I have seen folks posting questions like " How do I test AF on my 1DMkIII ? It's my first 1 series camera."
Or....." In all my theatre and portrait photography I have verified that MkIII Servo AF functions perfectly."

Canon very well could bring out a very high MP camera of 18+. It would be the only one of its kind. The only other FX camera with 18+ MP is the rather expensive 1dsMKIII. There is a price point this camera could easily fit into in my opinion. And it would be good for another 3 years.

Man did you just completely nail it!
In just two days of shooting, I have paid for the D700, made two 3 hour star lit time lapse sequences while I shot about 200 keepers of stock and fashion in star light with the D3 including a new iPod ad, climbed a 14,000 peak with the D700 and carried it around with me everywhere with either the CZ 35/2 or 50 1.2 AIS.

This is SO sad, you people never care about making brilliant, earth shattering images. You only want just to see who wins a war that only exsists in the minds of those on this forum.
All this speculating does it take away the most valuable thing you have in your life....
