If only things were as clearly deliniated as that...

Nikon has in the past used 3rd party off-the-shelf sensors. They have also designed and fabricated their own. They have also designed their own but had others fabricate them. They even obtained 3rd party sensor designs which they modified, which were then fabricated by 3rd parties, a build-to-spec kind of deal. So whose sensor is it then? It depends on what aspect of its genesis matters most.

And to complicate matters even further: Sony is (apparently) using Nikon's lithography equipment. So a Nikon designed sensor, build by Sony is, quite possibly, still made with Nikon tools.

Does anyone remember the postings about Nikon's full colour sensor using dichroic mirrors. I do, thought it was certainly interesting to say the least. It was posted on FM by Nik and a day later was all over the net.

Well, the images are better than were provided with the patent. The fill rate looks better now. Shame they forgot an '8' in the image. 1 micron should be 18 micron. But erhh ... TWO microlenses and three dichroic mirrors (or two and a regular one) make for a pretty complicated design. Lets see a working prototype first please.

As a Canon shooter I am disappointed with Canon's non response to teh D700. I took some test shots last night and it is as good as the 1D Mk IIN in trms of performance in a smaller, lighter full frame package with great features like auto iso, usable 6400 iso, film like image quality...Canon, wake up and smell the roses.

My thoughts exactly! I am no fanboy but my preference lies with Canon, but that may change after the Fall. Hopefully not and Canon will not disappoint.

I'm hoping that Canon gives us either something competitive to the D700, Or a bargain priced "40D Style" 5D Replacement. I think the last thing Canon should be doing now is "breathing a sigh of relief" They should be very worried!!

I had a play with the D700 today, And compared it to the 5D, And it made the 5D feel like a cheap toy! The 5D's LCD was noticeably worse then the D700 (Not surprising since Nikon uses the higher resolution LCD) But the Nikon was also much brighter then the 5D's screen.

The D700's Viewfinder also looked a little better (And larger) then the 5D too.

I am tempted to buy a D700 and the 24-70 to go with it (A very nice lens!!), But I'm going to wait and see if Canon announces the 5D2 In September. My dealer reckons that they might not announce it again, But announce a 1DMkIV Instead.....

Well, since this is the Canon mount SLRs forum (I said "here"), I always assumed FF means 36x24mm .

Makes sense, actually.
If the 5DII is to be a mini 1D (ala D700), Canon might decide to release its big brother first.

Can't afford to switch, cause of Nikon lacking my beloved fast primes. Moreover, 5D is good for what I'm doing. Just wish it had a better AF and AF micro-adjustment. Even if Canon won't reveal something worth the upgrade... so, I'll wait, till next release, or 1DsIII price drop. Still, D700 is really welcome at it's current price tag. That should (hopefully) bring us to 1-series price lowering\more feature-reach entry Canon FF model.
My dream - 1D3, focusing properly, with FF priced 4000 USD.

no matter what Canon announces, I'll get it anyway. No way I can afford to sell my lenses, flashes, etc. and get all the Nikon equivalents.

For all the glorified hoopla that the D700 gets, I cannot see that it is such a great step forward. That it bests the 5D? It d*** well should, the 5D is 3 years old. What do you call a product that doesn't make "best of class" when it comes out? A lemon. Question is: how long can it remain "best of class"? Second question: who will buy it? Only established Nikon buyers? A fair share of first-time buyers as well? Established Canon owners who switch over? If the first answer turns out to be correct, again, the D700 is a lemon. If it is the second, then it is OK. Only if it is the third can it be termed a real success. If it "only" tempts Canon owners until 5DII, or 50D comes out, assuming it is just a few months out, no way can Nikon sell enough into Canon's back yard to make it really lasting. Let's not forget (1) that 5D has been alone for 3 full years and making Canon oodles of cash, (2) that they (Nikon) could have spent some of the resources used for D3/D300/D700 to caring for the lower but larger end of the market where their offering (D60) is now possibly the least appealing of Sony/Canon/Pentax/Nikon, (3) that gaining market share is painful at the higher end because in this segment users have multiples lenses etc... making a full changeover very costly, i.e. only justifiable in case of a significant benefit from this change, and (4) has anyone ever said "Jees! I only wish this 5D shot could have been taken with a D700!"?

Well, if i was convinced that the new 5d whatever it is called would be somewhere close to the d700 in build (weather sealing?) and iso quality, I would be happy. I suspect that canon will cut me short though :P

If Canon will not announce a 100/2.8 IS I will surely get a D300 + 105/2.8 VR. To tell the truth, I am currently selling some items and have listed it as a preferred trade (I'd happily get a D700 but cost is an issue). After that, well, the 200/2 VR is looking much more attractive than the 200/2 IS.

To make things absolutely clear, I am not switching. I am going to play it both ways.
