p.1 #1 · Farnborough Airshow 2008

Hi guys,

First off, had a good look through the forums, but wasn't sure where to post these, so apologies if these are in the wrong place. They didn't fit into any of the subject matter forums really.

I haven't posted images on FM before, so please, go easy on me!

Anywhoo, I managed to get down to the trade day on Tuesday and saw pretty much the entire flying display. Sadly I was assisting on a studio shoot in London on Monday so I am extremely gutted to say I missed the Raptor. A ding-dang-deal! Anyways, some photos for you all:

Here we go Mister Bean (sorry about that)

Hope that isn't too many. Just some general thoughts would be good. It's hard to pick the favourites. There is one standout for me, but I'd already cut those 30 down from 900 frames!

If you'd like to see the rest, here are the full set. Two options, same content - pick your poison:

Am back there on Saturday and maybe Friday afternoon if I find the time! Can't wait!

Would you mind picking a few for us to critique? If you can post them in thread here, that would be even better. There's too many there to offer any sort of detailed response.

These are nice pictures. Clear with focus in a challenging situation - fast moving with difficult light.

1, 3, 6 are best for me - nice blue sky and you can see the pilot.

2 does not work for me because the plane is not properly exposed.

4 is interesting but you should not have to study a picture to figure out whats going on. From the back sidesways?

7 seems soft

8 b/w white flattens the picture too much for me

5 seems softer than 1,3,6

I suggest posting no more than 3 in same theme with exif and a specific question if you want good feedback. And number them so we can refer to them.

Rule of thumb is to leave space to fly into - most are dead centre - try cropping more behind and none in front an see if you like it better.

Cheers for the thoughts on this one Scott. Much appreciated. I was going for a silhouette with number 2 but I take the point, and as for 7... well, that was a dead photo that I tried to make 'interesting' in post!

I know that the rule of thumb with aircraft is space for them to fly into, but I find that without reference points in the sky, clouds or backgrounds (in low flight) then a more centralised crop works better, but of course personal opinion. I cropped a few of the Hornet shots into near pano's with the hornet entering from left or right. Worked sometimes, but othertimes, useless!

Thanks again for taking the time to offer your views, will make a point of offering up less images for critique in the future!

Nice shots, Tony. Being an airshow lover I like all of these, and they all work for me. It's hard to get shots with impact that don't simply look like run-of-the-mill flight shots, and I think you've got some nice shots with impact. I happen to like the prop-plane shot from behind, as you've gotten an interesting view with pretty good prop-blur. The Super Hornet shots are great. We've got a good show coming up here in the midwest portion of the US in a couple of weeks (Indianapolis, Indiana) and the Raptor is scheduled to fly. I hope the weather is good for us and that I can get some good shots of it. Nice job with these! I plan to check out your complete gallery.

Thanks for your thoughts Andy. I have to say, I disagree with Scott on the studying an image to understand it thing. The 27J was shot as it is seen, from behind while it was performing a knife edge turn. Still, each to their own and I appreciate the point being made. Can't wait to see the Raptor photos you take - best of luck with it mate.

Tony,
I'm no airshow excerpt, but I know what I like, and this is a great collection of shots.
I think they show a more diverse shooting style than most of the aircraft shots that I have seen - especially #2,4 & 7.
Unlike Scott, my favorite is probably #4, just because it's unusual. Just because a photo makes you think, doesn't make it bad, it's actually the contrary.:-)
Well done!

Most of airshow photos get put in the City, Still Life & Abstract Forum.
Check out Jim Wilson's Mustang Air-to-air. His website is also a good reference.

Surf Monkey...........

I'd say get them to the Mustang Air to Air as well. They are all killer shots and I'd be proud of them.

You've got some good shots here. The second really stands out to me. The silhouette works really well, the dark of the plane balances the dark lower right corner, the texture of the clouds is nice, and the attitude of the plane really conveys a feeling of power and speed. It's also a very different look than the typical aircraft photographs that I've seen, which earns a few extra bonus points from me.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. Just had a look at the Mustang Air-to-Air thread and will get some of the best ones up over there. Which should I go for?

#1 Nice shot though I would prefer a little more space on the left side of the image. Perhaps a tad under exposed as well.

#2 I like the idea. Again I would say the position of the aircraft in the frame is slightly off.

#3 Very nice, I like it!

#4 Interesting angle and composition.

#5 I prefer this to #3 as the banking angle is better. Difficult shot to do with all the white.

#6 Not a fan of this one at all, I think a different cropping ratio would enhance the picture more.

#7 Interesting idea.

#8 Seems more grey to me than black and white but good idea.

I like them all but I would like to see what number 8 looks like in color.
