p.1 #1 · FS: Sold: Canon EF 200mm f/2 L IS 200/2 $5150 | |
I am selling a used 200mm f/2.0 L IS.. yes, this is the new 200 that Canon had made available only 2 months ago in May. I'm happy to be the first FM'er to sell this gem

This lens is everything that it is advertised to be. For portraits and weddings, it's like the 135L on steroids-- 10x better-- the image stabilizer alone is truly 5 stops improvement. I shot my last wedding on July 12th using handheld shots 1/20 sec, ISO1600, f/2.0 inside a really dark church, and they were coming out sharp. I did handheld tests at 1/5 and 1/6 sec and they also were sharp (if you're careful). OF course at that speed, subject movement becomes an issue, but it puts this lens a huge cut above the 135L. The bokeh is incredible, and the reach allows for candid sniping at events.
I bought this lens used myself last week to attempt astrophotography with it. Just like the 600/4 is not optimally suited for macro photography, this lens is not optimized for astrophotography, which is why I'm selling it. I would love to keep it, as it is way, way more usable for weddings than my 300/2.8L IS. The 300 is better for astrophotos so I'm going to stick with the 300.
I can't stress enough how much I am impressed with the IS system for handheld shots. It really puts the IS on the 300/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 to shame. I was hoping to test it at a dark wedding reception, but the last wedding I did started the reception at 11:30am .
The lens is in like new in box condition with the original packaging, original warranty card (not filled out), copy of the receipt, trunk, strap, lens hood and caps. You know the warranty is good.. Canon just started selling these 2 months ago! Now some pictures (keep in mind I'm no product photographer and I don't have a macro lens):
The tripod foot comes off, but you have to unscrew it. I did not find the tripod foot to be a hindrance for hand-held shots:

UW date code (duh! date code doesn't matter! It's new! I know some nerd is going to ask for it)

Now the one and only teensy tiny cosmetic blemish.. I scuffed the lens hood. UGH. I am pretty frustrated with myself, but I'm taking $100 off it's resale value. The 300/2.8 uses the "120" hood, and this lens uses the "120B" - the 300's hood, when reversed, does not lock in place because of the tripod leg-- the 300's hood is slightly longer. I would've swapped otherwise Note: the largest scuff is ~3/8ths of an inch in size. Really, really minor. No effect on functionality.

Now for some sample pictures from a 40D (exif should be available, no samples available from a 5D just yet but I took some):

I focused in a hurry and the center point was aimed at her ear (this was cropped a bit)

For sports photogs... I was standing next to 1st base. This is cropped. Super fast AF, very accurate. Much, much better in low light than the 135L. I need the AF assist beam for the 135L on my 40D.. not so with the 200/2 IS.

Shipping will be via UPS ground in USA and Canada, insured. I will ship internationally via the US Post office, insured. Buyer is responsible for any duties or taxes. Due to the insurance, I cannot undervalue the lens on the customs form.
I am asking $5150 USD net to me, firm. However you like to pay is up to you-- I will accept paypal e-check, paypal, google checkout, US Post office money orders, cashiers checks. I will NOT accept western union wires. You are responsible for the fees and the shipping and insurance charges. Expect to pay about ~$150 USD for these. Brand new this costs $5500 from B&H and that doesn't include the extra $100 you'll spend in shipping. So consider this price a bargain on a brand new lens! international buyers will probably save money hand over fist from local costs at this price, even with paying import taxes. Unlike other sellers, I'm not afraid to fill out an extra form.
