How does Ritz handle pre-orders? Does it charge anything to the credit card before the camera ships?

Ritz doesn't charge anything until the order is filled. The only problem with this is that you don't know WHEN you will see the charge. It will just show up one day.

Good point. $3 large is a bit too hairy of a number to see suddenly appear.

.....and Ritz will have your camera still on BO while everywhere else has them in stock - been there done that with the D300 pre order. I ended up cancelling my Pre-order with Ritz and order in stock online from B&H. My suggestion is Pre-Order elsewhere.

Couldn't agree more. The D3 reorder fiasco with Ritz was a joke. Some pople waited over 3 months while other mainline camera shops got their D3 fairly quickly.

My local dealer is promising stock by the end of July. I'm sure the same is true for yours. Ritz is a lousy chain and would be the last place I would go for photographic gear.

I've ordered several bodies and lenses (including pre-orders) from Ritz online without any problems and very timely shipping.

Can't say the same about their retail operations.

Another bonus with Ritz Online - Their free shipping and no sales tax can save a few hundred dollars. The savings is based on adjusting cost of gear to compensate for tax and shipping, which they still charge, so even though you're still paying "market price" for the gear, the taxes are handled so you are not liable for any after-sales internet taxes which some states now require.

I guess nobody learned their lesson from the Ritz pre-order fiasco last November. Just point your web browser to the D700 product page on B&H and keep hitting reload until it says "In Stock". That's what I did and had my D300 the second week it was out.

I did Ritz pre-order last November and didn't experience any issues. Maybe just lucky...

I did. I preordered from Ritz and by the time they shipped something other camera stores were busy dusting off the pyramids of D3 boxes that had been sitting on their floor for months waiting for buyers. My advice, give them a miss, they're nothing but trouble. Even worse, when they did finally ship it they gave me no notice whatsoever and I ended up returning it to them (at my cost). If they'd had the courtesy to call and ask if I still wanted it I could have saved $70.

The D3 I have came from Amazon, ordered Wednesday and in my hot little hands Friday afternoon :-)
