For out of camera jpegs, mine does 240 ppi. For raw, of course, the default ppi can be set to whatever you want in the conversion software.

2) The only difference here was the zoom (again, focused separately):
could it be thermal issues?
had some same things happening with 40D's and even a 1dmkiin to a little lesser extent at a soccer match last fall and we decided it was thermal issues, it doesn't have to be that hot for it to happen, just need the proper temp differential.
if you shoot from the door of a house at 65 out into 12 degree weather (not celsius of course ) you can get terrible issues and same up in mountains or on fields at 77 degrees.
that said your cases do look a little extreme and tad more suspicious.
oen weird thing, we asked a nikon shooter a few months later, and he said he had no issues, however he also said he didnt really remeber the game and he posts lots of very small web pics so maybe he never looked at 100%.
our day the longer lens used the worse the issue.
someone using a 70-200 ona 20D had very little issues comapred to the 300 and 400s on the 40D and mkin.

so much for my CPS membership and its fast turn around time, my MK3 has been at canon for 8 days and after a call yesterday " it is still on the tech's table". Makes me wonder if they can even figure out what is wrong with it. Anyone else getting consistent "error 99" messages. Never had one until I got it back from the sub-mirror fix. Then started to get them all the time. Also still seeing focus issues consistent with others on this forum.

Seriously, I believe Canon has restructured their support and service system and the growing pains are felt in my shorts.
I read a post on another board that indicated Canon NJ was farming out work. Taken with a grain of salt I would not doubt it looking at the work I have been getting.
Also I have 4 pieces of equipment at Canon NY engineering right now. I had to escalate up the food chain and mention how it's unbelievable the equipment was being checked before shipment.
One of the things I was told the folks who would be looking my equipment over are the ones responsible for training the service center personnel.
They have had it for 14 days now.......

Good luck.
BTW, I don't believe Canon USA/Canada have any dedicated engineering dept/staff.
Their expertise torchbearers are so called training officers. Those trainers might even be photographers by (former) occupation for all I know.

Geesh..... You said....."BTW, I don't believe Canon USA/Canada have any dedicated engineering dept/staff." I'm nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs already!
I'll try and get a clarification on that. Can't see them telling a lie like that though. The address is in NY not NJ.

I wouldn't lose hope over that. One doesn't need an engineering degree to be a skilled craftsman/technologist. Even an experienced and equipment-savvy photographer should be able to define/describe a problem and thereby provide a guidance to the service technicians.

They're probably replacing major parts that need to be shipped from japan. The delay could be a good thing if you're getting a mostly new camera.

Got a call today from the NY offices "Customer Advocate" letting me know the engineers found my equipment mechanically within specs but needing adjustments and sent then to the NJ shop.
The work has been completed and will be shipped to me ASAP. No tracking numbers though.
It's been 14 days so far.
I'm still hopeful but nervous.

I'd sure love to be able to watch them check over the equipment (asking questions the entire time), then do the same thing as the NJ shop does whatever it does.

See, that's what happens when Canon USA brings their knowhow to bear on a problem. Now, do get ready for a sequel: after the mechanical troubleshooting, the electronic one is next.

Same here. I trouble shoot for a living and when I get a piece back that was worse than when sent I just cannot understand it.
My favorite part to see would be testing! I have called to check on work in the past and was told it was complete but it's in QA for testing.
If these things are that touchy they would do MUCH better money wise if they sold the computer calibration software for doing the lenses leaving the bodies on sacred ground.

I have just found out that I need to emply +10 MA on my 35L for daylight/mixed tungsten and then +17 for pure tungsten at night.
Can someone please examine their camera (if you have a problem one) and let me know?
Nope, with my new/replacement 1Ds3 I don't seem to have any erratic, weird and random AF issues anymore. I wouldn't have been surprised if I was having similair issues with my previous one though (obviously a dud). Morgan, I think it is time to ask Canon for a replacement cam... (you did had it serviced, right?)
