5DMkII, Nikkor 105/1.8 Ai-S, wide open, MFD and then cropped to about 8MP,
(some of the yellows are blown here but it wouldn't be fair to blame the lens)

The search for what? A fast 35mm prime with good bokeh?

Whats the min focussing distance to you lens... I have this lens, and finding difficult to use for floral or similar captures, as min focusing distance is pretty long..

BTW.. nice capture... Liked the way it come out..

Hi,

The lens barrel says 1m and I think that's how it is specified as well (I know very little about Nikkors). I just focused down to MFD and measured the distance from the target to the sensor plane to 0.95m.

The 105/1.8 bokeh is fine for flowers but the MFD is too long. At least in general. The depicted flowers are big (12-15cm in diameter) and the image is cropped. A decent macro lens is better for this application.

For a lens with good front bokeh.

Thank you. (You noticed my comment on the Pentax 50/1.4 as an example of lenses having good front bokeh?)

Here is another 5DMkII / Nikkor 105/1.8 combo image (wide open):
http://photos.imageevent.com/jonas_b/fmforumsmonthly/admirableblur/d4821_Nikkor_105_1.8_bricks_webM.jpg

The 105/1.8 is easy to like: it isn't super sharp wide open but there is still enough micro contrast to make the subject stand out. The speed and focal length allow for subject isolation. There is a clearly visible difference in background blur going from f/1.8 to f/2. The bad stuff; size and weight (it's not that heavy but I prefer lighter lenses) the focusing ring and the aperture ring both go in the wrong direction (the old Canon FD user shows here) and the MFD is a tad too long. The bokeh is OK and there isn't too much fringe. (I haven't used the lens on a crop sensor camera and don't know how it works then.)

Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AIS on 5D.

With 36mm tube, around f/2.8 or so:

No tube, wide open:

One of the better 50mm f/1.4s I've tried.

Jonas B, I'm late to the thread by a few posts, but the flowers and bricks look fantastic. The post processing is about as perfect as you can get according to what I'm seeing on my monitor. Nice bokeh characteristics.

No improvement needed! Great captures, especially the last one.

Thank you Steven. A kind comment indeed. appreciated. Maybe it can help selling the lens...

hiepphotog(?),

That's a nice selection of lenses, and a nice selection of images as well! If you don't mind, next time also let us know what camera you used. It adds some info, especially when it it is about images that aren't macros or close-ups.
