p.3 #1 · Who is going to switch now?

Will it have colour focus tracking? 51 point AF? Built-in flash? Zeiss lens compatability, i.e. auto-aperture? ISO 25600? EF-S lens compatibility? Weather sealing? 8fps?

Has Nikon totally given up on the lens war?

Including EF-S compatibility on the D700 would indeed be a white flag of surrender, don't you think?

Er...I was talking about the 5D2. The D700 has DX compatibility, after all.

Who is switching to Nikon now??

The excellent new Nikon camera (along with the new flash and lenses) is exciting and welcome news to all photographers, no matter what brand they use.

Great photographs have been made and continue to be made with a wide variety of camera brands and models, and competition and innovation from multiple companies can only improve the situation for photographers.

Would I switch? I would no more switch to Nikon on account of this than I would have switched from Nikon to Canon earlier. Over a period of time, the month to month "victories" of either company mean little, and one is better of building a kit around a particular brand - either brand, in my view - and using it to make photos.

Until Nikon produces fast primes like the ones Canon has... I wouldn't switch even if the Nikon bodies made cappuchinos. However, I really like the D700 from what I've read so far. So maybe there's some Ben Hur in my future too, who knows - but switch? Not likely.

What has people posessed into thinking that the 5d2 or whatever it will be will take EF-S lenses?

It simply won't happen.

I switched a couple of months ago to the D3/D300.
So far it looks to be the right choice as I'm very happy with my gear.
No QA problems and working AF.

I guess you all have to wait for Canon to come back, but I'm sure they will.

I thought this kind of thread only happened on DPReview.

I know it's only natural to speculate about the gear but I've been able to literally push it out of my mind and just focus on photography... pardon the pun.

The gear will arrive when it arrives and no amount of speculation or online pleading with Canon will get it to market any faster.

I bought the D30, 10D, 20D and 5D. I'm in no hurry at all to see the 5DII. I'll wake up one morning and the press release will be online somewhere. In the meantime I simply don't obsess over gear... granted, I'm an amateur. If my livelyhood depended on the gear that might be a different story.

The reason I recently bought my 5D was for the 24L, 35L, 85L & 135L. Since I dont want manual focus only lenses, I wont ever be temtped to switch until Nikon releases equivalent or better fast primes. If I used zooms only I might be kicking myself right now for going with Canon.

An unofficial (?) spec sheet for a new Nikon camera seems to send shock waves thru this Canon community (For one, who knows at this point what the factual performance of that one will be ? Could be another MkIII style fiasco a la Nikon ?)

Yet I know that there must be many of us who are largely insensitive to camera model-to-model vagaries, be they of Canon's or Nikon's making. There are at least three reasons for that:
(1) We think in terms of system ownership.....cameras come and go every couple of years, however, good lenses are not that volatile at all. That's not only a matter of $ $$ invested. We also appreciate the performance capabilities that the system offers which we don't see matched by the other party.
(2) At every moment there is quite a handful of excellent/proven EOS cameras available for purchase to satisfy most photographic demands, such as MkII(N), 5D, 20/30/40 D, 1DsMkII, etc. The fact that some MkIII series may not work as expected or that they are overpriced, that should have little bearing on many of us unless, of course, we are driven by urge to collect the latest toys or some such.
(3) It stands to reason that new, better performing and less expensive EOS cameras are just around the corner. Canon may want to show again who owns this game which is cyclical in nature. However, I do feel that in the past 20 years most of those cycles have been owned by Canon.

That I think is a bigger picture.
Switch away from Canon because of a couple of new cameras ? You gotta be kidding

Not worried, not envious, actually pretty confident in what the future will bring.

Unlike many I am not chomping at the bit waiting to jump the 5D replacement the minute it hist the market. Maybe I am dumb, but the 5D is sufficient to fulfil most of my needs (and in some areas beyond), where it doesn't I can live with it.

Nikon D700 or whatever body the competition will produce that's FF and just below the professional line will just stimulate Canon to at least catch up. If the 5DmkII isn't that camera, than the 3D or 5DmkIII or whatever the damned thing is called will.

More players means better features at better prices.

Again, I'm pretty confident that a future FF non 1D-series replacement will end up in my hands, with more features and probably at a better price than the 5D I now own.

But why the rush...

FM Canon pretty boring lately with all these speculative threads about vapourware.

It's official. And given that it's basically putting the D3 technology in a D300 body, chances of some freak technological faux pas seem slim.

Go, switch, be free! It's so funny to hear the same dialog I heard on Nikon boards a year or two ago. Back then Nikon shooters were threatening to switch to Canon if Nikon didn't soon announce the D3. You guys remind me of a tiny little row boat adrift in the open ocean, going back and forth in whichever direction the waves take you. Go ahead switch to Nikon but at some point Canon will then end up trumping Nikon again so do you again switch back until Nikon then moves ahead . . . Good god you're all insane or insanely rich.

I have two Mark II's and a fairly new Mark III along with a decent collection of glass. Yes Virginia, I DO have a Mark III (a gasp is heard from the crowd), AND IT FREAKIN' ROCKS! So, I'm more than satisfied with Canon products and don't feel a need to mortgage my house in order to buy into a different brand. Can I shoot at ISO 25,000? No, but why the hell would I want to? Do I need more megapixels, more fps, more focus points? About as much as I need an F16 fighter jet just to go to the grocery store.

Ultimately I don't really care I just think that these posts are so incredibly inane. Think I'll go out and shoot some pictures with my extremely low tech, cheaply made, plastic lens, plastic-bodied Holga. My kids will probably come along since the youngest has a Fisher Price digital camera and my eldest snaps 640x480 shots with her Hannah Montana point and shoot from Target. Low tech? Low budget? Absolutely, but very high on fun and personal satisfaction.

If the 5D Mk II Is just going to be a 40/50D With a fullframed sensor, Hopefully Canon will do what they did with the 40D, And drop the price and undercut their competition! 5D Mk II At the current 5D Prices would be great!!

I am considering it. I have been using Zeiss and Coastal Optics lens more often on my 5D. The 24L and 35L I have although awesome lenses are not attached as often as in the past. Though still used I have not needed the 1.4 speed or autofocus that often.

I could then make my holy trinity 5D, Fujifilm S3 Pro UV-IR and Nikon 700.

Will I switch away from Canon. No. Cameras are just tools to accomplish what we all love, taking photographs. Each has it's uses just like lenses. Though if I get a Nikon 700 the 200-400 F4 would then be very desirable and I could then use my old Nikon E Series lenses which I orginally got for the purposes of UV and IR photography as just normal lenses. Though one might question the logic of that but hey they are just tools in the kit
