I was switching, I bought a 5D to give Canon some more time ~ yes, I'm a sucker, but I came to actually like Canon. All my colleagues are already back with Nikon, price and specification for the D700 and the add or remove battery pack is great actually, the way it should have been for the 5D too.

The sad fact is most of my colleagues had bought the Canon 1DMKIII so it's directly Canon's own fault ~~ sad.

I might go Ben Hur (one foot on each horse). I think I will probably get a D700. The clincher was the built-in flash.

I should have included that in my poll (Shoot with both systems) Oops!

I'm like you too, I will wait and see what Canon offers with the 5D Mk II, If it doesn't deliver, I might pick up a D700 and 24-70 to shoot alongside my current setup.

Yes, see, I believe their problems are endemic. And anything coming without a compete redesign will have these problems built in.

Some of the issues facing the 1DMKIII today, I posted for the original 1D five years ago. They got worse in the 1DMKII, Canon said they could not fix it and made the 1DMKIIn ~ a pretty stable camera platform.

Canon previously said they could not match Nikon's AF prowess in low light and AF sensitivity because they specialized in the high speed AF acquisition for sports.

Canon suddenly introduce a MKIII which can match the Nikon in low light, AF sensitivity and speed of AF ~ but to use a sporting analogy, all their race horses are bolting in all directions!

Canon have a painful pill to swallow, a new build from the ground up, Nikon retreated some years ago, they just could not compete, Canon relied on it's superior galvanization of its technologies to out manufacture anything Nikon could surprise them with ~~ but the enemy is within.

The D700 looks great - for Nikon users. Considering my shooting needs it doesn´t do anything that my 5D cannot do. So I don´t care personally, but I am happy for Nikon users as having a FF DSLR half cam is the best thing since sliced bread.

No intention to switch. I like the whole Canon system, where body is only one part. Of course I like the specs of D700, it looks to be a fantastic camera. But so is my 5D, even though inferior in many features to D700. Bodies come and go, the system stays.

14-24 + 24-70 + SB-900 + D700 is enough for the time being.

There will always be some who switch (from either system) but it will never happen in significant numbers.
Nikon are only catching up to Canon not surpassing them with incredibly superior cameras as was the case with Canon when they first introduced the eos system that caused the initial revolution.

To be fair, picture quality on the D700 will be 5D-like, if the D3 is anything to go by, so no reason to get too worked up. But built-in flash with a 35f2 will be a killer rig for me once I've done the fancy stuff.

Canon is a big gorilla. Products like the 1Ds3 and 5D sensors, 200 f1.8, 85L, and 450D show that when Canon gets serious, watch out. But they also show that Canon develops technology incrementally. When it comes to the AF, metering and flash systems, and in-camera image processing, it's pretty clear that Canon needs to develop new tech, as Nikon is certainly much more advanced in those areas. I expect some pretty good innovation from Canon in those areas over the next year or two, and cheap big white lenses to maintain the PJ relationship.

In my local pro dealer last week there was an all day queue of pros trading in Canon for Nikon. Nikon is accepting big white Canons in trade and warehousing them to manipulate the market.

If the 5D replacement is lame arsed, I'll have a foot in 2 camps. I'll keep my 40D and 1D II and long glass and sell the 5D for the D700 and grab a 24 PC, 24-70 f/2.8, 85 PC and use my existing Zeiss glass on the D700.

But I doubt the 5D II will be lame.

The body is very attempting and I believe 5D successor can’t match it in features although it’s probably going to be cheaper. There is still one big issue for me. Nikon doesn’t have the lenses I bought Canon for, which includes 24mm F1.4, 35mm F1.4, 50mm F1.2 and 85mm F1.2.

If it has a new more accurate and reliable focussing system with 6fps and weather sealing it will certainly hit 1 series sales very hard. Sure, image quality will be better than anything Nikon currently offers, but 12 megapixel is a bit of a watershed for IQ. Many pros feel they don't need more than that. And Nikon's in-camera processing is very good.

In my opinion it would be daft to switch because of a camera body.

I have a large range of very good quality Canon lenses and they don't get any worse because Nikon bring out a new model.

How many of you would have changed your entire system to Nikon because of the introduction of a new film camera body? Canon will soon catch up.

What other mount takes Leica, Zeiss, Zuiko AND Nikkors?
Besides, when all warranties are finished, that "made in Japan" under my camera makes me all warm and fuzzy inside

Oh yea, I almost forgot, Canon mount takes Canon lenses too

A: When I left Nikon their 70~200AFS/VR was and IMO still is superior to the Canon version.

B: Canon had plenty of time to 'catch up'/ coupled with their inane antics over the 1DMKIII and the actual superiority of the new Nikon products, I no longer believe they have the will or the skill to actually catch up anymore.

can't we just wait till everything settles down? i mean, canon must be aware of Nikon happenings. whatever happened to people advising to invest on lenses and not the body because bodies come and go.

As I stated in an another thread I don't think Canon would care if 1Ds III sales dropped to their natural levels ie only bought by working pros, if the new camera generates more revenues than that lost. Bottom line is paramount.

I'd be happy with 16MP if they can deliver the IQ and seeing how low the 1D III noise is, a 16MP 5D II would have same sized pixels and had 18 month more improvement, so should be even better. I want more than 12MP for the larger prints and better cropability for wild life.
