To be fair, picture quality on the D700 will be 5D-like, if the D3 is anything to go by, so no reason to get too worked up. But built-in flash with a 35f2 will be a killer rig for me once I've done the fancy stuff.

Canon is a big gorilla. Products like the 1Ds3 and 5D sensors, 200 f1.8, 85L, and 450D show that when Canon gets serious, watch out. But they also show that Canon develops technology incrementally. When it comes to the AF, metering and flash systems, and in-camera image processing, it's pretty clear that Canon needs to develop new tech, as Nikon is certainly much more advanced in those areas. I expect some pretty good innovation from Canon in those areas over the next year or two, and cheap big white lenses to maintain the PJ relationship.
