p.1 #1 · 10-stop ND photos

Inspired by photos here in the landscape forum I decided that I couldn't be without a 10 stop ND filter. The B+W filter I wanted was out of stock so ended up with a Hoya ND400, which is a 9-stop. Today I had some spare time so decided to test it. Combining it with a polarising filter I could get 20-50 second exposures at f/16, even with the sun out. The landscape was nothing special (outskirts of Copenhagen) but I still liked the effect. Hope to use it some more.

Let's see you daytime long exposures, would love some more inspiration

Has anyone ever experimented with blending a long exposure with a normal one, e.g. blending a person into a smoothed out landscape?

C&C welcome.

Thanks for looking,
Jan

Canon 40D, 10-22mm, 27 seconds, f/16, ISO 100.

Hey Jan,

Man, that is cool! Way to go. I am definately going to get one, I am just waiting to get the vari-ND from Singh-Ray, that one is really sweet.

Glad you like it Jim

Very odd, I'm seeing a horisontal line through the clouds, about a quarter down from the top, in particular in the left side of the image. This line is not visible in the Photobucket pic, that I'm linking to?? Is this a compression artefact and if so, where does it come from?? I'm cunfused!

All of these taken with a 10-stop B+W ND filter.

Great stuff, Tom! - I remember seeing the bottom two before

A couple of questions:

Do you focus before you put on the filter? I was hoping to use live-view but it was too dark, didn't work.

How do you meter?

Thanks,
Jan

I compose the photo with the filter off. I focus using auto-focus and then after it locks on focus I then switch off the autofocus to manual focus located right on the body of the lens. Then screw the filter on and take a 45 second exposure. I then "guess" how long an exposure will work based on the camera histogram. After a while you get a pretty good feel for how long an exposure should be.

This was a 42 second exposure with the Hoya 9 stop, and a 2 stop GND.

This was a 40 second exposure. I love the affects this filter achieves. I only wish I had more access to large bodies of water because Tom has some great results with his.

That's a remarkable image, with motion in both the clouds and the foreground grasses. Very different and striking!

I still wish I could find a slide in 4 x 6........9 or 10 stop filter that would fit my Lee GND holder. That would make life much easier.

no filters, but 12 second exposures on paper at f64 or f90 I believe I've just placed an order for yellow, orange, red, green, and polarizer filter for my lenses (using step-up rings so they are all the same size!), I'm thinking about picking up a 10 stop ND as well, I enjoyed the slow exposure of the paper, but I'd like to get that effect (and more!) on film!

To of you who posted images on this page - WOW! what an inspiration.

I have to try this.

Jan, Thanks for the tip about the Hoya filter, I've tried buying the B+W here in the UK without success, I've therefore just ebayed the recommended ND400 from the US. Can't wait to try it out.

Thanks.

Good to see that people are being inspired, I know I am

David, the ND400 seems to work well, even when combined with a polariser. They clip the corners at 10mm on my 10-22, though, but only just. Without the polariser my daytime exposure would "only" have been up to about 15-20 seconds, instead on 30-40 seconds with both of them. There's a bit of vignetting but it was easily adjusted in Photoshop.
