I like the lines in 1 leading down the path. B/W is a good choice for me.
2nd one has way too much orange tint for my liking. I think I might crop the top significantly to just above his head. A smidge more room under his shoe would improve so it does not look pinched. I like the position of the guy in the frame. I am not sure the action matches the picture. It would be better if he was shooting the shot rather than looking at the camera. Or if the depth was tighter to focus more on him instead of having competiion between the man and the view.
Scott,
I completely agree with you about the 2nd picture. I am a little rusty in photoshop due to my nearly two month long hiatus from taking/processing pictures. I think I will go back and re process that photo. If you wanted to try those things out you suggested on it, you are more than welcome.
Opened, hit ctrl/l for levels, adjusted the tianangles in to the sides of the historgram and then clicked the grey dropper and put the cursor on his black shirt. All of this was to get the white balance right and I struggled between the shoes and the background.
Then as I said above I did not like the background being clear so I selected the man with quick select, ctrl quick select until I had all of him and selected inverse (to get background) and filter motion blurred the background a bit. It would be better if I was more careful in selecting background.
Then I cropped off the top and posted.
It still looks a bit greenish but I ran out of time
