p.1 #1 · magazine test of the 450D not doing it justice

I read a couple of test reports in mags today, the 450 got good marks but what I`d like to point out to would be purchasers is that they rate the camera with the kit lens(which is IMHO better than previous kit lenses) but what they seem to leave out is just how this chip comes to life with decent glass on the front. So! if you are going to test one out, make sure you try it with some decent glass if you want to see just what it can do. In the past L lenses out resolved crop chip cameras but my findings are that the 450 is completely the reverse.

Most of Canon's prime lenses and many of their zooms easily outresolve all current DSLR sensors, some by large margins. 450D included.

A recent feature in the Sunday Times had the 450D dead last in a comparison with it's (roughly) similarly priced competitors.

IIRC their primary reason was image quality. I guess they got a dud kit lens....

Yeh, probably poorly put, what was meant was that you need those better primes and zooms to show you what the camera can do from the point of IQ. Although the kit lens aint bad it never really stretches the 450. Put a better lens on the 450 and the jump up is more than say putting the same lens on a 40D from the kit lens. Thanks for coming back though, I can sleep better now

Maybe they did have an under par kit lens (as we know they certainly aren`t all equal)That`s the problem when you get a camera with a chip like the 450 has being sold as an entry level camera(which it is I suppose) a £30-£50 lens must sacrifice something and there is no substitute from doing your own test ,working in your own way, on your own monitor. I did a test with the 70-200 on both my 1dsmk3 and the 450(nothing scientific) just moved the tripod for a similar view and other than image res size there wasn`t that much in the fine detail(if at all) I stuck my Contax 35-70 on the 450 and it responded a lot better than any other crop chip Canon I`ve tried it on. I think Phils test said it all really. I`m not saying it`s a 1 series beater obviously but it is a great little camera that was needed IMHO to compete with the opposition.
