Maybe they won't update it - maybe they will discontinue it and full framers will have to settle with the 1Ds III? Could be that a camera that gives you 90% of the image quality of a 1Ds III for 1/3rd of the price is not a commercial risk worth taking (again).

I suspect you're right. Yesterday the 5D was taking up the very last picture slot on the Canon cameras at DP Review - after that, they just become text links. All my cameras are text links
From the pricing shifts I have noticed, I think the 5Dii is mere days away. I expect they will be weather-sealed, with higher FPS and it will shoot 4992x3328. Pricing US 3300 or therabouts. Sadly, here it will be much much more.
Next to expect: a G10 with flip-out screen, and next year we can expect a D50 followed by some insane 1 series update. But I have a 5Dii on my Christmas wish-list, for sure.
A senior Canon rep was asked about the 5D several months ago and alluded to the fact it was from a gear head point of view a very boring camera and they would have to offer a lot more to stay ahead of the game when it was replaced.
Canon often let's us down, but I think starting with the 40D and then 450D they are slowly getting the message about features and the 5D replacement will be a much better camera in many areas. AF and speed are the biggies, so far every model from the 1D III foreward has had updated AF, the 5D won't miss out, but I hope it goes beyond the 40D.

Or maybe full framers will find a bargain in the Nikon D3. C'mon, do you really think for a minute that Canon doesn't see a profitable market in reasonably-priced full-frame cameras? There are competitors out there, and Nikon is just the first to bring a body to market.

Network effects and imperfect information.
It'll take ten years for Canon or Nikon to lose any major market share because of those two aforementioned concepts.

Don't get your hope high just yet on "updated AF". Look at all the "cries" from 1D Mark III owners
My current plan is:
-Buy the new camera within a couple months of release.
-Sell my current 5d and 20d and buy a 40D
About once a week I check to see if there are any legitimate updates then continue the wait. The only inconvenience this is causing it sitting on the wad of cash I will use when the camera is available.

If you like full frame (as I do), you might want to keep the old 5D as backup. It's still a solid performer. I have the 5D and a 40D - guess which one I prefer in most situations....

Currently I am using 20d and 5d, I would simply like to update my kit as both are, especially the 20d, are getting a little long in the tooth.
I have purposes for both camera's - sometimes I want the reach of a 320mm f2.8 but do not want to spend $3000 to get it - a 1.6 crop camera with a 200mm does just fine. Sometimes I want the reach if an 80mm f 1.4 or a 136 f1.8 - a 1.6 camera with a 50mm f1.4 or 85mm f1.8 does the trick.
Ultimately these are tools for a job, in my case that is mostly weddings and some commercial work, so having the flexibility of a full frame and crop frame are extremely beneficial.
On average I shoot 70-80% of my frames with a 5d but at this last wedding (outdoors) I found the 20d with a 200mm really got me in tight whereas I would have had to crop the 5d frames with that lens at that distance to get a similar result.
I am hoping that I will use the 40d more than I do the 20d - the 20d leave a bit to be desired in low light focus.
Well when the 5D2 comes out I will trade you my 40D and some cash for your 5D. I've been wanting to get a second one for a while but figured I would wait a bit.
I got the 40D for backup and have fired maybe 800 shots with it, after using the 5D I just hate picking the 40D up.

Canon often lets us down, what a dumb thing to say.
Bet it won't be 6.5 frames per second as is stated on that German page. But 16mPx is a given, digic III is a give, bigger screen, self cleaning sensor, 14 bits, ISO in vf, better display in VF.
I suspect it'll have the 40D focusing system. Maybe with the supplimental points like the 5D. They have to leave folks reasons to buy the 1DSMKIII.
